If so...then what could that possibly be?

The definition of `good` of course.
what is good for you isn`t good for your neighbour.
So what is good for you will be bad for someone else.
Why do you want to do good???
Just mind your own business. And do whatever you feel is good for you.
what is good for others - only they themselves know, so forget it.

It happens all the time. You save your childs life by having another baby and using its bone marrow or whatever to cure your first child..
Robin hood stole from the rich to help the poor..
People kidnap children to get them out of a bad situation.
On tv you see police plant evidence of a crime to get the bad guy off the streets.
The lists go on and on the problem is that once you do the good thing in the wrong way you have to live with it and even though good came out of it you still did wrong.

I guess it comes down to picking the lesser of two evils

Sometimes it's not the "what" but the "how" that can be done in a wrong way. For example, if you offer something to someone in need in a demeaning or condescending way.

Another example is how some Christian leaders in the USA often influence their congregations toward a political agenda rather than a spiritual one.

Even when doing something good we must use wisdom. Giving to the poor and the homeless is good. But giving money to a poor homeless alcoholic can be wrong. The giving must be in an appropriate way to benefit the person and not to further the probable reason why he or she is poor and homeless to begin with.

yes I do- I will not go into details but I had to resign from a very vital ministry, when the new leadership decided to change the way we answer phones in order to get more clients. The ministry is great- the way we got the clients wrong.

Here is just one of many examples of doing something good in the wrong way.
Opening the door for a handicap, elderly woman then, you accidentally slam the door on her head and kicked her walker from under her.
Didn't mean it, of course, but stuff like that happens.

Life is such an avalanche that I have trouble sorting out the relationship of my intentions to my actions. I tend to take credit for what goes well, and disown what does not. I see that it is a common failing.

I think that good deeds can be done for the wrong reasons...for example, i can be kind and nice to you if i think you have something i want that i can get....

That would be an example.

it is my personal beliefs that we should do the right thing just for the reason that it is the right thing to do...

i hope you find what it is you are seeking.....

Blessed Be

sure, mistakes happen all the time by everyone, no matter how good were the intentions.
i'd like to think that we learn from our mistakes and hopefully use that knowledge to help others if their interested in listening.
