would you hand feed her, and for how long before you took her to the vet? And, at what point (after finding nothing wrong with the pet) would you let the veterinarian continue to give her tests? At $600, at $700, at $800? And then what would you do with your pet?

I find it amazing how many people don't read a question. If they read the question they would not have talked about death nor they would not have told me to take my cat to the vet (my question says I already did that).

The bill came to over $800 and the vet kept doing tests and giving medication, and insisted on those, even sent me home with medication, yet he contends there is nothing wrong with the cat, he found absolutely nothing wrong with her.

When cats go without food for even a few days, they'll actually forget to eat. Sometimes, they'll lose all interest in food. Of course, they HAVE to eat and drink or they'll die. I rescue cats and occasionally take in one that's half starved and won't eat. If they won't even touch the various foods i offer, and they are starving and dehydrated, I'll force feed them.

Take some tasty wet food (one with a smooth consistancy) and mix it with some Catsure (a liquid dietary supplement for senior cats, found in petstores) and a squirt of nutrical (high calorie vitamin supplement for cats, also found in petstores) and mix it until it's a liquidy consistancy. Open the cat's mouth and squirt it in the back of their mouth with a dropper or oral syringe.Their metabolism has slowed down and their stomach has shrank. They will vomit it all up if too much is given at one time. Feed small amounts several times a day. Keep offering their regular diet. Eventually, they'll start eating again.

A cat does this when it's getting ready to die. I had two cats go through that. To get them to at least drink a bit, I gave them tuna from a can that is in spring water. Don't get the stuff that has the oil in it.

Bring your cat to the vet, but tell them that they are only allowed to take an x-ray. If nothing shows up on the x-ray, then have them do a blood test. A full body x-ray should cost about $150.

You will have to push them to do it though. Tell them they don't have permission to do anything else with your cat. If they refuse, ask to speak to the manager or owner, who ever is higher in the chain. If it's a vet that you take your cat to when you get the annual vaccines and check-up, you will have a much better chance of getting them to just do an x-ray.

Good luck. BTW, if your cat's breath is extremely bad, it could just be an infected tooth.

my cat did this...we had to put her to sleep two hundred dollars and a few shots she didnt need later we changed vets and the vet we had realized putting her to sleep was killing us my daughter and i...she cut her rate in half put our beautiful cat to sleep and that was it..she was honest about her problems and agreed the other vet was out to make money...they told us we could keep her alive by getting a feeding tube put in and it was going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 1300 bucks and there was no gaurantee..as much as i loved this cat and loved my daughter there was simply no way i could do this..it would have taken a great deal of time to clean this tube etc. i chose to put her to sleep because it was unfair to her to keep her here for us..we all mourned the loss of this cat and im getting teary eyed thinking about it..it was hard on her sister as well who also cried tears throughtout this long weekend....she was nine years old and why she stopped eating and drinking noone knows but i have learned to watch my cats...if they dont eat and drink for a day or so their body starts to break down inside and they feed off their own organs..once this starts there really isnt any turning back..we still have her 13 year old sister and a baby cat of two..and we love them we wont ever forget duchess and what a hilarious cat she was..she was deaf loud as all get out and solid white..but we all loved her..she is buried in our backyard with a handpainted stone done by my daughter who had this cat since she was three and we put her to sleep when my daughter was ten..she was already two when we got her..you have to make that choice of what you do yourself..its a hard one..but are you keeping it alive for you or for the good of the pet....

edit and if you read the answers you would realize people have went thru this with a cat..when they dont eat they die..your vet cant find anything wrong with it...you can force feed but if your cat wont or cant keep it down it will do as my cat did and die...so maybe you should read the responses and not make judgements on people not reading your answers..your question doesnt say you took your cat to the vet..it says at what point would you take it to the vet and after how much money what would you do...

If your cat stops eating and drinking there is definitely something wrong. I would have the vet keep testing until whatever it was , was found , in the meantime I would feed and water my cat anyway I could (give sub q fluids, hand feed etc) There is a product called nutri cal very high calorie made for animals who have lost their appetites.

I would take her to the vet the next day. If the vet could only do tests to keep her alive, sadly, I would put her down

I would take the cat to the vet but I would find one that was much more reasonably priced . After all you could buy a new cat for less then $600 and that should relfect the value of the service as it is done in other venues of services pricing .
