WIth your shorter irons, 7-PW, you need to swing down on the ball and try to "pinch" the leading edge of the club in between where the ball and grass meet. Remember, you don't want your divot to start until after you have contacted the ball. For your longer irons, you want to use more of a "sweeping" swing, which does not produce spin. It is very hard to spin long irons, just like it is hard to spin your fairway woods (3W, 5W, etc.). Also, some balls produce more spin than others. For instance, the difference between the Pro V1 and the Pro V1x, is that the Pro V1 will spin more, but you get a little more distance from the Pro V1x. Hope this helps

To spin a ball on an iron shot on the downswing you hit the ball, then the turf which imparts a backspin as the ball strikes the clubface. One gets more spin with the short irons due to the loft and grooves. On your distance irons and fairway woods you are not looking for spin, but want distance.. The pros hold greens when hitting long irons by imparting side spin( cutting across the ball).

Its Mostly From Your Swing Speed, The Faster Your Club Head Speed The More Spin Youll Get. That Doesnt Mean Try And Kill It, Get Your Swiong Speed Done By A Golfsmith. Other Factors Are Whether Your Club Has Square Or U Grooves In It, Or The Type Of Ball You Use, The Nike Black Ones And Your Pro Vs Spin Faster Than The Cheaper Ones. Good Luck To Ya.

The main way to spin your irons is to hit down on the ball, almost like your pinching it into the air. For longer irons, I don't see a point in spinning them, but it seems like you could use the same idea.

Backspin is mainly a result of a good swing. If you're having trouble getting the ball to 'stick,' you likely have a bad, or not very powerful swing.

Any advice you get online about improving your swing is useless. If you want to become a better player, you need to take lessons from someone who can look at your swing and tell you what you're doing wrong.
