9 times out of 10, the cause is dehydration. Cats who eat dry food are dehydrated because they don't drink enough water. It's just the nature of the beast.

The solution is to feed canned food - at LEAST 50% of the total diet, although eliminating dry entirely is better.

There are oily supplements you can add to the food or water, but a proper diet is the better way to go.

Cats do drink plenty of water if they're on dry food. They drink if they need water in their bodies, it's as simple as that really, So no, a dry food will not be causing the dandruff. Iams is decent food.

The dandruff is white, right? Just checking, because if you're seeing any black specks on your cat's fur, that's flea dirt! Phone a vet and ask what they can provide you with or suggest to help with dandruff.

Your roommate needs to feed them a better quality of food, omega 3 fatty acids are important to skin condition not to mention it's the time of year for dry air .

edit: Have they always had dandruff or did this just start? You could try putting more fish oil in their diets that may help , and if it is really dry in your house maybe a humidifier
