Ok I came home tonight and found that my dog ate a whole package of hershey's kisses with the metal wrappers. There were about fifty in the package. I'm really worried about him since he ate all the metal along with the chocolate. Should I take him to the vet? My dog is a very large sheltie btw.

Why are the larger shelties the counter surfers? My hubby's rescue, which he adopted from me before we started dating, is the one who thieves the candy. He has eaten a similar amount, and been OK, but we had him to the vet for observation anyway. He was skillful enough to remove most of the wrappers. I'd call the vet and ask for advice. They'll know more aobut your dog than we do.

Hershey Kiss Wrapper

That sounds like a 12-ounce package.

A large sheltie weighs about 40 pounds. For a dog of that size, there's a 50/50 chance that TWENTY POUNDS of milk chocolate will be fatal.

Except your dog couldn't eat twenty pounds of milk chocolate. That much fat and that much sugar, the poor thing would be barfing it all up.

The pooch may have a problem with diarrhea and vomiting anyway, from all the fat. If he absorbs all 12 ounces, the chocolate might make the dog a little more agitated.

I used to have a sheltie. God, she was beautiful, and affectionate, and intelligent. But all we were raising on the farm was grain. The poor cats didn't like being herded all the time, and when people would stop at the farm, the dog would try to herd them, too, which confused them.

I had to move into a small place for a while and my cousins took the dog, and they raved about what a good dog she was. They had sheep. But before I could get her back, she tried herding a pickup truck one day, and was killed.

Scratch your dog behind the ears for me, and tell her that she has a friend she's never met. And tell her that chocolate is a bad idea. That's the problem with intelligence. It makes them so *curious*.

My dog loved chocolate. Yes, it can be poisonous, but the level depends on whether it is milk or dark. do a search for dogs and chocolates on yahoo as I can not remember which is worse. Watch your dog to make sure that it does not seem in distress. It should pass the wrappers ok. Remember that you can find an emergency vet in your area late at night via the internet. I have had to do that myself since my regular vet's er coverage was clear on the other side of town (Large town) Mainly watch him and next time make sure that the chocolate (and all candy) is out of reach, especially here at halloween when you will have it in the house for the trick or treaters. Good luck.

Is he throwing up? Does he act hyper? The darker the chocolate the more of the chemical that hurts dogs. It actually makes their heart race etc. If he is not acting funny..sick, etc. Just keep an eye on him give him lots of fresh water and watch him for any symptoms. Please keep the chocolate where the dog cannot get it.
I had a Sheltie eat 2lbs of boxed chocolates he was fine so
hopefully all will be well. It was on top of the counter, I never figured out how he got it.
Oh yes the dogs age matters too. Older dogs have more problems with these type things.

My dog did almost the same thing once. He ate a whole bag of Hershey's that were in the plastic wrappers. Nothing happened to him. If a dog eats chocolate a couple of times, it won't kill him or blind him. Don't be worried too much. Just keep on eye on your dog and see if he starts behaving oddly. He may throw up or have diarrhea, but unless that occurs a lot, you have nothing to worry about. If he does throw up and have diarrhea for a couple of days or if he starts to behave differently, then you should take him to the vet. =)

I think your dog will be ok. but sometimes the best thing to do is to ask your vet. He will know if that much chocolate will affect your dog. I wouldn't worry about the wrappers he will eliminate those in his "poop" . I have a small dog and she ate like half a pound of chocolate last christmas and she had some bellyache and diarrhea, but that was all. I called my vet and got her checked because that was what I needed. you know. peace of mind. So if it help you to sleep at night, give your vet a call.
Good luck!=)

I am really concerned for your dog—more about ingesting the chocolate than the wrappers. The wrappers will just come out the other end, but chocolate can be deadly to animals. Here are some links that tell you what to do:

PLEASE CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY!!!!

You should definately keep an eye on him and if you notice him not well, take him to the vet straight away. Chocolate is highly poisenous to dogs and can kill them if they consume large amounts.
When i was working as a vet nurse, a dog was brought in that had ate half of a very rich chocolate cake. He almost died & had to have his stomach flushed out.
So, make sure you keep a close watch on him for the next couple of days.

chocolate is really dangerous to dogs. one time my mom bought a huge bag of M&M's from sams club and my dog ate about half the package. He threw up like crazy but we never took him to the vet. He is okay now though. plus, he is a small dog [boston terrier]

if your really worried take him to the vet otherwise he will most likely poop the wrappers out and feel a little sick at first.
