They are perhaps the oldest and largest of all living things on earth. Their spiritual importance reaches across all the religions. The Tree of Life is one of the most powerful symbols there is, rooted in the story of Creation. I love the Legend of the Dogwood, and the Orthodox telling of the story of the two trees in the Garden of Eden, where the seed from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil takes root in the skull of Adam, growing until it becomes the tree of the Cross, bearing the Fruit of eternal life. I love, too, the story of Gautama receiving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. A tree grows from earth to touch the heavens. Many of the African myths and stories centre around various trees, as do many of the songs in the Vedas. The Banyan tree supports a whole ecosystem bridging between land and sea, salt water and fresh Trees are some of the first plants to colonise new land masses. Trees mark the boundaries of the ancient glaciers. Trees are found among the rocks where nothing else grows. Many trees are living fossils that saw the dinosaurs come and go. Trees are the source of fruits and spices, fragrant gums and perfumes, medicines and poisons. I use frankincense, myrrh, and other fragrant gums in prayer. Amber, too, comes from trees and can be burnt as incense as well as worn as jewelry. Trees sing and react to touch. Have you ever handled Mimosa? or listened to the pines or an aspen wood (A stand of aspen is a single organism). The spiritual importance of trees is immeasurable. Trees are the lungs of the world, it's sad we kill so many.
[All the Relics of the True Cross in fact date to one piece of wood, which can be traced with almost certain provenance to a piece found buried on the Hill of Calvary at the Instigation of Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine. This particular piece is of pine, and combining all the portions known to be extant around the world, plus what was lost in cutting and carving various bits into sizes varying between a particle worn on the person to the largest which is but inches in size would not make up the third of a cross necessary to a crucifixion. The actual cross itself was most likely a composite of various woods, at least four of which were major parts of the gibbet. The main upright, called the stipes was probably already in situ, either a tree that had grown there, or one of several types of post permanently erected for the purpose of this gruesome form of execution, its main purpose exposure and shame.. The cross-bar or patibulum was the portion the condemned carried across the shoulders or upon the back, this portion alone weighed in the neighborhood of 75 to 100 lbs., especially if it were one someone would be nailed to. It was designed to be pegged or lowered onto the upright with the person nailed to it, forming a T, A large peg or seat was driven into the centre of the upright, further supporting the body, the person might also be nailed to this (naked, in further humiliation), pegs that were nailed driven into the heels at the sides of the upright finished the manner in which the condemned was affixed. Olive wood was likely for the pegs, the pine might be the patibulum, or stipes, or both. The titullum, the placard Pilate wrote to be affixed above on the cross is also another major piece of wood, since it had to be large enough to be read in three different languages. If all humanity is represented in the weight that hung upon that tree, it is not altogether unlikely that all the various types of tree are also represented in the wood that bore that weight.]

The word guru can have a negative connotation. However teacher is a more proper term. I was a Christian, and I was a member of many denominations before staying with one for nearly 25 years. Each church has a preacher and teachers and written materials to help the newcomer learn the doctrine. I am now Wiccan, and I am solitary due to Wiccans being underground and untrusting of new people in my area of the Bible Belt. I have been on my path about 7 years now and am where I was in Christianity after only one or two years. That is because I have to find out by myself the things I desire to know. It is a lot easier when you have a teacher and fellow members to ask and discuss things with. I am just now at the point that I believe I understand if something is Wicca or not and just now beginning to feel that I truly am Wiccan. By the time I had been the last type of christian for 7 years I was already a teacher and preacher and one of the people that new and old Christians came to for advice and teaching. So to sum it up it is easier to learn with a teacher or guru. Just like in AA if you want to really be a good stepper, then get with one of the old timers who have achieved the guru status and you will have an easier time of learning how to be a good stepper. You will learn all the buzz words and slogans, and how to use them. BB

Standing, sitting or laying in the aura of trees will allow the trees to reveal to us their strength, resilience, patience and deliberatness. I have witnessed many a tree to completely defeat a bulldozer and most earth moving machines, their roots extend for much further than most folks think, giving them the strength of the Earth, yet in a strong wind they can bend to accomodate the changing forces that also attempt to move them. They tend to outlast us ALL in terms of stubborn existence and can show us the patience of surviving against repeated onslaughts. Even though wood is softer than rock, a tree can, over time, actually split even the largest of boulders with its roots. Trees have all this and so much more to show us if we'd only take the time to listen, watch, and learn from them.

They draw strength and nourishment from the earth, while their roots allow them to be "grounded and stable", they endure through all seasons, bend with the wind, but dont break....
And a friend of mine coined the phrase
"Trees side by side break harsh winds"
Hope that this helps...and i hope that you find what it is you seek.
