Really! It depends on that person. A bad gift for me is a shiny, red Ferrari.
Where am I going to park it? I don't want to pay tax on that damn thing. Etc.

Check the culture and ethnicity of the person. Each culture has their do's and dont's list as far as gifts are concerned. Two of the others are correct. To the Chinese, Knives are a no go, and clocks signify death and unless it's a funeral, don't get that.
Don't get anything cheesy like, a toaster, blender, etc.
No cash either, unless the person you are giving it to really needs it more than any gift. Some people, like me would rather have the money. Some people, even if they are broke, will find it insulting and offensive, even if they were going to return your gift to the store to cash it in anyway. It really depends on the personality of the person.
To MOST guys, we don't care, REALLY. I would rather have money, or a couple of cases of beer, a couple of bottles of wine, or cognac, or brandy, some good quality cigars. A really nice Dinner at Mom's house with friends and Family. And some good lovin' from a beautiful girl.
To women, however, gifts mean a whole lot more. To them, the gift they get may signify how much love and care for them. You should put a lot of time and consideration into buying a gift for a lady, and it will show them you are paying attention to details and that you really do care.

Summer, no matter how hard you try, you can never please some people. The only gift I ever gave my Mother that she liked was cash, I gave her and Dad a nice sum of money to spend on their anniversary in Vegas. She actually smiled. She sorta disliked the skirt and blouse combo I gave her the Xmas before she died. She didn't say much about it. I buried her in it. Mom had a warped sense of humor, she would have appreciated the humor, after chewing me out about the present she didn't like
Clothes are never a hit, unless the person picked it out themselves. Even somebody's favorite perfume, the kind they always wear, the only kind, and it will be wrong because they have an almost full bottle.
Never give small appliances like can openers, blenders. Even newlyweds with nothing to furnish their abode with do not want them.
Think twice about things you have crafted yourself, unless you are expert at it, and sell your crafts for big bucks. People do not want homemade things, especially if they are not the latest style, or are not expertly crafted. Even if Martha Stewart made it herself, and signed it.
Weird things, like the naked lady with a clock in her belly statue, the antique cherry pitter, or anything that requires a set of instructions just to figure out what it even is.
Candy or sugar containing foods given to a diabetic. Alcohol to an alcoholic, gift certificate to Dirt Cheap [local discount booze and cigarrette store] to someone trying to quit smoking.

A glossy picture of yourself, like one of those glamour shot things. Unless it's to your mother. Even then.
Clothes- no one ever gets the size and style right when they give someone else clothes. Then you're stuck taking them back. And if you assume a size and it's bigger than the person- it's a bad idea.

What my father in law got me and my husband for Christmas one year. He brings this bag over full of crap...stuff from the dollar store. Just random stuff he picked up like a wooden spoon and a rubber mallet.
Oh yeah, don't get anyone one of those twisty towels for their hair! My brother and his wife gave me one of those for my birthday one year.
Sometimes I seriously wonder about my family!

Most people would take a scale the wrong way, same with a gym membership, unless its for a guy who likes weight lifting.

If you ever give someone a knife of any sort, they are required to give you a penny back so that your relationship won't be cut off.
Personally, I think it's neat, but it can be embarrasing if you give someone a knife without knowing the tradition.
