Why are so many religions based simply off stories, I'm not trying to offend anyone, but, when I think of it, I can't get over the fact that Bible, and lots of other religous books are simply stories with underlying codes. Does anyone have any thoughst about this? Again Not trying to offend anyone, just want to get other peoples opinons.

The Bible isnt just stories. Its the word of Adonai, the living God.

The thing is, though, that it's not just stories - it's historical record. Nothing in the Bible has ever been disproven historically, archaelogically, geographically, geologically, or scientifically. (Not saying that everything in there can be proven by modern science, but nothing has ever been disproven.)

It goes deeper than that, though...it is God's communication to man. There is a part of man - the spirit, the soul, whatever you want to call it - that is made specifically to fellowship with God (made in His image) - and the Bible is one way that God communicates with us. If you look at how it was written, it's pretty amazing - 40 different people, from different places, backgrounds, and over hundreds of years - wrote 66 books that are in perfect harmony with each other. Throughout the Bible, there is not one typo, not one contradiction, and not one thing that has ever been disproven. The vast majority of these men had never even met each other.

If you read books that are written today - either by one author or a team of authors - you will be hard-pressed to find one book that does not have a typo or a contradiction somewhere. Plotlines get mixed up, typos happen, etc. We're human. However, 66 books written by 40 very different people, over a large geographic and social distance, don't contain one mistake. They have different ways of stating things that are tied to their own perception - their personality - but when you research the original languages and set the words in the historical and grammatical context they were written in, they flow together perfectly.

Aside from the fact that I just know that I know that it's the word of God, the above evidence (and the tons more that exists) is more than enough for me. It's been more than enough for people for the last 2,000 years...and it's more than enough to be accepted by the majority of society today.

And no offense taken :-)

There are differing views...
eg.
Let us say that religion and religious text were 'suppose' to convey to mankind true spiritual lessons - to help mankind evolve toward higher consciousness and awareness - towards a peaceful and harmonious society, etc etc.
That was 'suppose' to happen when God appeared, and passed on knowledge via the various prophets...

However when religion established itself, and became an institution, the so-called teachings became set in stone, became fixed, written down and then consolidated into what we have today ---- but unfortunately during this process, the original teachings and meanings were lost.
You have only to look at what we have today - to see that. Examine the Bible, Koran, etc etc and see that they do not measure up to what we expect of such 'holy' text. That the knowledge and wisdom should be immediately apparent to us... sadly I find that to not be the case at all.

And were you to come across such knowledge and wisdom in text - would you recognise it as such?
Then, try reading the 'The Talmud Jmmanuel' text and see for yourself?

The reason why religious insitutions have failed us, is that instead of the spiritual teachings being #1 in priority, they became only secondary, to the survival of the insitution itself, and unfortunately this happened a very long time ago...

cultural myths make cohesive a society. believing in or taking literal myths is conditioned into the mental matrix during childhood. when people say, in all their sincerity, that the Bible is the "word of God" they don't know why they believe it ... they just do. mommy and daddy believe it. the preacher at their church believes it. their friends believe it. their political leaders believes it. almost everyone they associate with believes it therefore it must be true. they believe in the Bible ... just because they're suppose to.

even if they were somehow motivated by curiosity and a quest for truth (which they are not b/c they believe they already know The Truth) overcoming conditioning and peer pressure is often very difficult for folks. it's easier and safer to believe what you're told to believe.

Because it's true. Think about it. If I wrote a book about Abraham Lincoln and said in this book that he was actually from Argentina, never freed the slaves, and was allergic to chicken, how long do you think that book would be in circulation? There would be people coming from all over proving that it wasn't true. Now think about the Bible. There were still people alive at the time it was written...but it continued to circulate and grow stronger. They tried to crush the "Christian movement" from the beginning, but couldn't. Why? Because people knew it really happened.

Good question. Before I read it I wondered too. It's not the stories alone. It's the lessons contained within the stories. More importantly, there are some things you understand in the spirit that your mind can not rationalize. Many of the stories of the bible are in parables so you can't rationalize. God is beyond your rational mind. Quite simply - people who consistently meditate on the principles of the bible get results. They stay with it even when others provoke them because it's so much better than their lives were before....

Because it was the first book out for mass distribution when they invented the printing press.

People didn't even have to know how to read, because they knew the stories.

Those underlying codes and principles are the reason it's accepted. It has the additional advantage of being time tested, too.

I feel the bible is accepted because people are desperate for there to be SOMETHING more to life than they have or see here on earth and the bible provides that illusion.

i'm okay with what I have here, little though it may be and much less than I want in life. It is what it is and I'm okay with that. If there is to be more, saying words in my head to something that I don't know exists isn't going to change it... *I* am the only thing that will change it.

Read a Buddhist text and you will see similar - however, they strictly state many are "legends" and to be skeptical - the point of any of their stories is the underlying message and not the actual story.
