I'd suggest you read "Modern Man in Search of a Soul," by Carl Jung if this topic interests you.
I don't think people are born with a soul, or free will, or self-awareness. These three concepts are developed through self-introspection and growth. Most people never acheive any meaningful level of self-awareness. At best, most people purchase a mass-produced "soul" from one religion or another. Religion gives some meaning to their lives, but hinders growth, rather than enhancing it.

Well actually the Bible doesn't address whether or not animals have souls or go to heaven. But since the subject isn't addressed people assumed that is the case.
According to theology the 'soul' is the life animating force within each of us. It is the part of the human makeup that is intended to live forever. People believe it is the essence that can live without the human body, the human mind you speak of. If this is true, it indeed would be extremely significant. If not thousands upon thousands of people are really stupid.
God says, in the Bible that is, that the 'soul' is the part that is suppose to bear witness to His existence meaning that it lures people to think about Him. However, it is up to each person to decide whether they want to believe they have a soul and that soul has a purpose.

No, we do not have souls, as in immortal souls, we are a soul, a living being.
If we had immortal souls then Paul would not be able to make the following statement: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Nor would God have inspired Ezekiel to write: 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die....Eze 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die....
Further proofs from the Bible:
1Corinthians 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. (If we already had an immortal soul, this statement would not make sense)
The unrepentant wicked will die and cease to exist, which is the second death: REvelations 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death... 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years... 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death....21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:28
7Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
Ecclesiastes 12:7
All life comes from God. I would refer you to another post in response to another question, but you would not be able to find it. Life did not emerge from a pool of organic molecules, and does not self evolve. It was created. All of it returns to the creator eventually. All of it. Yet, only human life has a soul.
A human life is composed of organic biochemistry, including the brain which you believe is your self, a soul, which is the distinguishing and unique person, and a spirit, which is the non corporeal motivator of the soul. The soul is the person’s unique identity, and is the conduit of the spirit, the media whereby the spirit and the flesh interact.
Since you seem convinced that humans have neither, I must ask a few questions:
Is murder wrong? Is war wrong? Is child molesting wrong? Is stealing wrong?
Would you hesitate to kill an animal or an insect or a bacteria?
Would you willingly wage war against a nest of pests, like termites or mice?
Would you punish your dog for mating with his very young female pup?
Should a human feel remorse for taking honey from a bee hive?
Do you eat meat? Would you eat the flesh of another human?
You try to convince yourself that humans are the same as animals, yet you hold very different concepts of justice and morality for people and for animals.
Why?

Technically, a soul is simply the animating force that allows any animal to move. Under that definition, since you typed this question, you do have a soul. Is it immortal? THAT's the rub. There are NDE's and OBE's that can, and cannot be expained away. An honest researcher has to allow for it.

If you believe in God and Jesus Christ than you believe that everyone has a soul. As for animals, what chapter and verse did you read that said that they don't have souls? I've never read that anywhere.

We are the living soul as a creation of God however, after our death our spirit will move away from our body and will be taken by God under his temporary custody and when judgement comes, you will be decided where to go either heaven or hell to be burn on a lake of fire.

I think that in cases of severe Head trauma we have some proof for the non existence of a Soul. After all how do you quantify what a Soul is? Perception?
