Working with a company with its main location in the area where the wild fires are out of control. They had a deadline of today and I havent heard anything back. However, my contact - the project lead, is not at that location, and they also have many other locations, and not sure where the work is being done. Im putting together an email to check on the status, but would also convey thoughts for their employess who might be affected by the fire, but not give them an out, if this is not why its late? Any tips, everything I write sounds like a sympathy card - kind of a "thoughts are with you" wording, seems too personal.

At this time, just be sympathetic to those who are affected by the devastation.

Erm, this is a personal thing happening. It is affecting many people; so surely a short but polite expression of concern, much like the one you just mentioned, is in order. Just checking to see how things are going and my thoughts are with the employees affected by the terrible fires ; is fine.
