Black smoke indicates way too much gas, but usually cars stall when cold from not enough gas. time to go to a shop.

My thoughts would be a carburetor problem. In particularly the choke is set too rich or will not release when it warms up. A 1988 truck usually does not have all the electronics of the newer cars so it would be something mechanical in nature.

Chances are, that the fuel pressure regulator isn't functioning properly, or, the engine coolant temprature sensor could be out of it's range. Either way, you should take it to a shop where they have the diagnostics tools to see exactly how the fuel system is operating.

Start it up and leave it run for a few minutes while you are in it don't let it run when you are not in it for obvious reasons give it a few revs to warm it up faster that should do it.

Cheers.
