We just got an 8 week old puppy yesterday and he is a pomapoo/cockapoo mix he weighs about 2.4 lbs. Whenever we leave we put him either in the bathroom or another room but he cries and screams very very VERY loudly, loud enough that we can hear him outside the door to the apartment so i know others around us can hear him. Any suggestions as to what we could do to help sooth him?? We are going to start putting him in a crate when we leave during the day.

Ignore His Cries, He Has To Learn He Can't Do That Any More. He's Used To Being With His Brothers & Sisters All The Time. Give Him A Kong Toy To Chew With Some Liver Paste In It, Which You Can Buy With Your Kong Toy From Most Pet Shops. He Will Be Too Busy Licking The Paste Out That He Won't Notice You Have Gone Out The Door. Kong Toys Are Also Very Good For Puppies With Growing Teeth.

Things at your home are new to him. He's scared and lonely. Put him in his crate when you leave or are not watching him. Be sure he has a soft blanket and perhaps a toy or two in there. Did the breeder send something from his old home with him to help him feel at home? When you leave put him where he will be least likely to be heard by the neighbors so you don't have them complaining right off the bat. Don't take him out of the crate when he is whining. Wait til he is quiet, even for a few seconds then take him out. If you keep coming back and taking him out of the crate or picking him up, he will whine louder so he won't have to be left alone.
He has just lost the only family he has ever known and he's used to having other puppies and mom around and people so it's going to be difficult for him for a few days. He doesn't know yet that he has a great new loving family who will take good care of him and play with him a lot.

Crating your dog will give him a little cubbyhole of his own and make him feel more secure. Put in something that smells like you, like a shirt or a pillowcase that hasn't been washed. Leave a chew toy for him. Some people have recommended leaving the radio or television on (on low volume).

However, one thing I must caution you against is rushing in and comforting him when he yelps. He's doing it for attention and if you give it to him, he will start learning that crying = attention and he will start doing it all the time.

Don't worry too much. This is a rite of passage that almost every young pup must go through when moving to a new home away from his mom and buddies. In a few days, all will be fine.

tire the pup out alot before you put him for the time. when he is in the crate or bathroom he will want to fall asleep instead of crying for you and that will turn into a habit for him. when you go to tire him out tho don't make it a playful sort of time as this will just want more and more of your time and attention. and this is what you are trying to get away from. go for a long walk with him. the size of the dog should not matter on getting him to be quiet small dogs along with big dogs need the activeness the same. walk walk walk walk best answer good luck

Crating the puppy will make him feel secure and safe. He will learn to love his crate as a safe haven when you are away. We give our dog his favorite toy and he is content to wait...A term I use with him. I never seem anxious or apprensive when I leave..just calmly state. You wait,Louie. I will be back soon. Then turn around and leave the house.
He is near the door. He seems to like to look out the window also.

Yes on the crate. Put a treat in there, put him in there, then leave quietly, don't make a big deal out of leaving. Leave the tv or radio on for him. Betch he screams for just a couple mins then settles down. When you come home ignore him for a couple mins before you let him out, don't make a big deal out of coming home either. He'll get it, it will take time.

Get the crate, put a towel or blanket that has your scent on it in there (to curl up in) and put a wind-up clock under it. The clock's ticking sounds like a heart-beat; so he will feel like he is not alone. Remember, he just got taken away from mom and siblings so he is used to hearing heartbeats from them while he sleeps and the towel/blanket will help him to get used to the "new" home smell.

He's crying cause he's lonely. Try making his area very comfy with toys and things to play with, something to snuggle close to. You may want to turn on a tv or radio...the noise may soothe him. I have also heard of putting a loud ticking clock near them. The sound can imitate their mom and litter mates heart beats.

yes,try putting a shirt that still smells like you in a box with the puppy and leave a radio on so he can hear it. Your smell and the sound of voices or soft music should do the trick.

a wind up clock can help, because it reminds the puppy of the mothers heart beat, plenty of chew toys and leaving on the TV or a radio
