That is a very rare case, call sony tech support or return it to the store you bought it from and you'll get it replaced for free. The PS3 has a very low .2% defect rate, most people can leave their console on for months running folding@home or playing games with no problems at all.

The only way a PS3 can overheat is if the room temperature is probably like above 85 or 90 degrees or something and it doesn't have the proper ventillation in the back and front of the console.
I haven't had one single problem with my PS3 for the past 11 months.
It's normal for the PS3 to feel hot/warm to the touch in the back when it has been in use for a long time, don't worry about it.

Your PS3 will get hot, but I doubt its overheating. The PS3 has been tortured repeatedly to see how reliable it was and it ALWAYS survived. If you're still able to play it, then its not overheating. If it is in fact overheating, I hope you still have the receipt!
That black piece of hardware is extremely durable (unlike its rival).

What method have you used to determine that it is overheating as opposed to getting rather warm? There are lots of electronics in that little box and equipment like that does produce heat as a by-product. My question becomes, "Are you sure it is overheating?"

When it's warm during gameplay - it's normal. Jus put it in well ventilated place. If temperature is very high - PS3 will turn off automatically. Let it cool for an hour - turn it on again.
