I guess im the only one with a 3 and 6 year old who know all the words to a Janice Joplin song, lol. I hum or sing really soft and slow "Me and Bobby McGee". They love that song, but at bed time we don't totally break it down and rock the ending like we do going down the road in the car. :)

Our bedtime songs are Take Me Out to the Ballgame (a family tradition for several generations) and random Christmas songs such as Away in a Manger and Silent Night. I think my little guy just likes things that are kind of soft and mundane when he's tired. During the day we sing all kinds of things together. I want him to grow up loving music!

Oh, and a guaranteed go-to-sleep-in-the-car artist is Jack Johnson. I swear he is the baby whisperer. Shins work well for that too. :)

Interesting question. When she was little, I sang the classic kids songs and lullabys, and as she got older some modern music creeped into the "playlist". Now that she's 8, if we're singing, it's current stuff.

Really, I found it didn't matter what I sang (or how badly!), because she just liked to hear me sing. I could have sang last sunday's news and she'd have been happy.

I used to sing Jesus Loves Me , any song by Heintje ( well I sang along to his records, yes I said records), Peter,Paul and Mary and Dolly Parton's Coat of many colours. I enjoyed songs that had a little story to them.My daughters would go to sleep but I'm not sure if it was because my voice was soothing or if it was to escape it.I never said I could carry a tune and never let a lack of talent stop me. I didn't think many parents sang to their children anymore. What a missed opportunity to bond with each other.

hahahahaha. Who knows. Personally, I hum lullabies or old bible hymns. Whatever works though. lol If I'm having a mental block and can't think of ANYTHING (or nothing is working) I start singing the last thing I heard. It could be a newer song, a commercial jingle, a silly song.... whatever.

Lots of Indie Rock/Pop. Regina Spektor, Belle and Sebastian, Destroyer, Death cab for Cutie, The Shins. My twins love it!

It does seem like there are very few universal children's songs anymore - to many people making up new (and very bizzare!) ones. I sing my son hymns from church, and silly camp songs.

Lullys, made up tunes. Never anything current because I am trying to get them to sleep, not wake them up. Lisa
