I just got back from iraq and work full time but am paying off a big debt. I have nowhere to go and am living on the streets . is there a shelter or halfway house I can live at for free.

Have you tried the VFW? If you were near me, or if you can relocate, I'd let you have my spare room.

Depends on where you are in most cities the free ones are first come first serve, there would be a line that forms at 5pm or so. Some religious ones wont even let you work or earn money until you have had a year or so of intense Bible study and some will make sure you affirm you are a Christian otherwise they will turn you away. Some want you to work and will take a portion of your check. Some domestic violence ones will make you quit your job so you won't be tracked by your abuser. You should call 211, all but about 2 states have it. It is a social services referral line equivalent to 911. They can give you a list of shelters in your area and their requirements...and maybe even some other possible options.

Go to the Legion are you a vet ? there are lots of places that will help you...Salvation Army... Red Cross...
