i'm 49, and way back in the olden days we just ran and jogged with our imaginations to entertain us while we did.

Oh, you hooligan!!! lol, I'm not old but I highly doubt people in the old days concerned themselves with such stupid things. All of the tech stuff we own are really just luxuries our generation has the privilege to have. But I must credit the people who lived back then for inventing the stuff we have today. Oh, and by the way, people in there 30s probably just used walkmans or cassette players. You should ask this question to people in their 50s or 60s ( which I highly doubt are on yahoo answers.)

Sony walkman has been around for almost 30 years - started out as a tape/radio player, evolved to a shock resistant cd player, digital minidisc, and mp3 player. Walkman still exists as a phone/mp3 player.
Not sure what people listened to while running back in the 70s though...

Since iPods are just a few years old and an iPhone is just a few months old you must have strange definition of old people - like anyone over the age of five for iPods.

Why, we had phonographs. Before that, there were little miniature birds bred to play specific tunes. Of course, back in that day "treadmills" were just tanks from the Great War turned upside down and driving in 1st gear. You'd just run along the tracks. But try telling that to the young people, they'll never believe you...

OK - I am 44 years old (birthday in few weeks). When I first started exercising (running/walking) we had what they called a walkman. You could use it with cassettes or cd's - it had little earphone with it ....... Wasn't that bad... -- It was bulky thou when you ran. Workout at the gym and talk to people while lifting weights instead of listening to music or just listen to what was on the surround sound playing .......

Oddly enough, it didn't effect running times or workouts. If anything, people got to know more people from their gym because they could hear. There was always music playing, so it wasn't like it was silent.
Personally, I enjoy the regular nature sounds and concentrating on my breath when I run or walk outside.

Yes, real people used to line the running trail where I ran. They would all sing the same song, timed perfectly to my running speed. It was amazing, but, alas, it has been replaced by technology.

left foot first, then right, Repeat process until you finish workout.
But seriously, as a runner, i enjoy just being out on the road, working out. No need for music or any other device. Bettter if i have a running buddy.

Ouch...I am 18 and I dont use an ipod or anything. I just go running because it relaxes me. It gives me a chance to clear my head and I come back tired, but refreshed. 3 miles a day is good enough for me.

I am seventy-eight going on seventy-nine.
I dont understand what ipods etc have to
do with running and working-out.
Milking cows by hand is good
for strong hands so you can open the jars
into which you have put home-canned tomatoes,
splitting fire wood is good for the whole
body... etc.
