I have lived in the San Fernando Valley for over fifty years. No major fire has burned into the flat lands of the San Fernando Valley from the hills. Van Nuys is in the flat lands, though the south end of Van Nuys does come fairly close to the Hollywood Hills. When I left the Van Nuys area around noon today, it was not smoky.
The main commercial airport in the San Fernando Valley is the Burbank (or Bob Hope) Airport. The Van Nuys Airport is the biggest general aviation airport in the United States. LAX is about 20 miles south of the San Fernando Valley. All three airports are open.

Not to worry. California has the best fire fighters bar none. If there is danger your friend will be out of there big time. Out hyar in the wild and woolly West we know how the cow ate the cabbage and not much is left to chance.

I don't know much about the geography of California, but my heart goes out to all of it's people and I hope the fires can be contained soon!
