If you put freon gas in your air conditioning at the auto zone parking lot will this cause the auto zone hole to get bigger? I was going to do this on Saturday but if it's going to cause the auto zone hole to get bigger then I won't.

well you can no longer buy Freon with our a federal permit, what you get at auto zone is R-12 or some form of it. And no that stuff will not make the ozone hole any bigger. Side note the ozone repaired its self by almost 33% last year.

"Freon" is generally a generic term for refrigerants in general. There are several different kinds and chemical make ups as well. The ozone issue comes from the use and release of those refrigerants that used chlorine as part of the composition of the refrigerant. The problem still exists, it just isn't the show stopper that it was a few years ago.

I don't know if you can still get R12, but R134a is probably just as good and about the same price. R12 is being phased out because of its alleged ozone depleting properties.

Contrary to what people on this forum tell you, R12 is a CFC.
