I thought that the 60GB PS3 may drop a little more in price because it is the same price as the 80GB model. But the truth is, it probably cost Sony the same or more to produce the 60GB PS3 as it cost to produce the 80GB PS3 because the 60GB PS3 has the emotion engine in it, that allows it to be compatible with almost every PS1 and PS2 game.
If you are considering buying a PS3 I really recommend the 60GB PS3 even though the 80GB PS3 comes with a free game and 20GB of more harddrive space. To me, the extra backwards compatibility is worth it. The 80GB PS3 is backwards compatible but it's not as compatible with most PS1 and PS2 games.
I don't think that the 60GB PS3's price will drop anymore, but if it does it will probably drop $50 dollars and that's it. And by the way, the 80GB PS3's price has already dropped to $499 and just in case you don't know, the 40GB PS3 is coming out November 2.

Sure they would. It's Sony who decides what the price should be, not the stores.
For the casual gamer, they're not going to buy the 60 or 80 gb. They're going to get the 40 gb because it's the cheapest.
For the gamer, they can either go with the 60 or 80 gb. For those that want backward compatibility, they're going to go for the 60 gb because of the emotion engine. For those where backward compatibility isn't all that important, they'll get the 80 gb because it's the better deal while also providing backward compatibility.
There probably will be a 50 buck price drop in the future, probably around the holidays or if Sony gets desperate and want to get rid of all the 60 gb models.

at my best buy the 60gb still is $499 but it comes with a free game (your selection is very limited i dont remember which titles exactly) or controller. i would guess that there will be even better packages/deals as the new 40gb arrives because they want to phase out the 60gb completely.

I predict that the PS3's price will remain steady through the holiday season.
However, there may be a price drop in January. This would attract the attention of people buying HDTVs for the Super Bowl.
I work in this industry, so I've got a pretty good idea of how these companies think. I can't guarantee anything, though...
Hope this helps and best wishes!

Right now the ps3 80gb with motor storm costs $500 the upcoming 40gb $400 with spiderman blue ray movie and right now they are giving away the ps3 60gb with one of the following games heavenly sword, resistance fall of men, lair, NBA 08, Warhawk, motor storm, or formula 1 championship edition, with a sony blue ray dvd remote.
this deal is only in walmart
other stores offer the same but with less games to choose or an extra control instead of the game and no dvd remote
