Oy. Worst/best question ever. Best because it's a good question, and a question that I ask my clients. Worst because...where do I start??
I make wedding cakes. I also have asked myself this question, for my own wedding at least once every two days for the past 5 years. Dang it. Now that I have found the person I'm going to marry (although not yet engaged because money is tight), I think about it even more. He loves spice cake, but I don't. So one layer will be spice cake and probably cream cheese filling. From there, I'm playing with my choices, anywhere from yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting, chai cake with vanilla buttercream frosting, to hazelnut cake with hazelnut buttercream. And then, there is this side of me that wants a croquembouche (French wedding cake-cream puffs held together with hard caramel), creme brulee, and home made ice cream. And then different flavor cupcakes. So, I've thought about having an all dessert reception, but I don't think that everyone would appreciate it as much as I would. And I'm only having 50 people (hopefully less) there...

To everyone, I would say go for more than one flavor. I am so sick of vanilla/chocolate cake with raspberry filling. I hate the flavors, and working with raspberry stuff isn't fun. But hey, if it's your favorite flavor, go for it, but just remember, not everyone loves it as much as you do. :)

Most people have one flavor. You can have more if you want but that can mean more than one cake (two smaller cakes for instance). One girl I know had cupcakes at her wedding and everyone got one. There were five different flavors of cake and everyone likes that better. Instead of cutting the cake the bride and groom split a cupcake together.

We had one flavor but a lot of people have a different flavor for each layer of the cake....the first tier being the bride and groom's favorite!

Speaking for fussy eaters everywhere, do it ONE FLAVOR and make sure the filling is appropriate for the flavor.
I hate too many flavors in one dish - drives me buggy. I don't eat many cakes because there's 2 kinds of cake or an inappropriate filling, or worst of all they drizzle sauce onto a perfectly good piece of cake - ICK!!

There is a really cute Southern Tradition of having a "Groom's Cake" and you can have it either centered around something that interests him (an example woudl be a baseball stadium) or you can have it be reflective of the actual wedding cake and maybe scaled down. The tradition is that the wedding cake itself is a white cake with whatever filling you would like and the groom's cake is the chocolate cake. But it's entirely up to you and your baker as to what you want.

good luck and congrats.

Our cake was four tiers with 2 different flavors. Although, with the bakery we used, we could have had a different flavor for each tier (if we wanted) at no extra charge.

My cake had three layers. The bottom layer had vanilla cream with blackberry filling, the middle layer had chocolate dobash (my husband's favorite) and the top was vanilla with strawberries. I know it's hard to decide upon just one flavor so if there's two or more that you like -- just designate a layer with one of your choices.

I fell in love with a cake, it was gorgeous and it was huge.
There were elenven cakes and every single one of them was a diffrent flavor chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, lemon, peach and so many more. Our small cake that we get to eat on our one year anniversary is Kahlua.

I am having a different flavor for each layer. Carrot, White with fresh strawberry filling, and possibly Margarita or Mocha.

We're going to have vanilla with lemon curd filling and maybe another layer with key lime creme filling.

The groom's cake will be carrot cake with the cream cheese icing.
