First handgun? Smith and Wesson revolver, in .357.
No levers, buttons, slides, removable magazines to have to learn and the most reliable handgun ever.
Please take a basic firearms safety course from a certified instructor.
(Thanks Boker! Ruger makes very good revolvers too, you can't go wrong there)

Gentlemen,
I respectfully disagree with all of you.
Daniel,
If this is your first firearm, or even just your first handgun, do yourself a HUGE favor, and let your first handgun purchase be a .22 LR double-action revolver. You won't find a better one than a Smith & Wesson Model 17 or Model 617.
If you already have some handgun experience with a .22 and now want a defensive handgun, you can not possibly go wrong with a Smith & Wesson revolver. For small pocket revolvers, the Model 60, Model 649, and Model 640, all in .357 Magnum are great defensive revolvers. For larger belt guns, the Model 19 (M-66 in Stainless) and Model 686 are neck and neck competitors for the title "Perfect Packing Pistol."

There are many good brands. Go to a gun range which rents pistols. Try several and see what you like best. After you have found one or two that you like, talk to the gunsmith at the range and ask about the durability of the gun you have chosen. Most gunsmiths can give you some great help, but first try several to see which fits your hand and feels comfortable. No matter how good a gun is, if it doesn't fit you it won't be any good.

If it is your first gun, I would have to recommend the Walther P22 which is a .22 but great for practicing and learning how to shoot. After getting used to that, I would graduate to a Smith and Wesson or a Beretta. A lot of people like Glocks and although I don't dislike them, it isn't the best choice as a first gun. After selecting brand, you will have to decide which caliber. The .40 is a good choice unless you really want to pack a punch, in that case the .45ACP will be the big boy.

I have little experience with revolvers. For semi-autos I like my Springfield Armory XD. I have a 9mm service pistol (4" barrel) and a .45ACP Tactical Pistol (5" barrel). They both shoot very well with no hiccups or jams. Very easy recoil and shoot well with. Natural pointers. I like Beretta. I had a Px4 Storm that I recently traded in. Nothing wrong but already had a 9mm and was looking to get into the revolvers. Sig Sauer, Taurus are good brands. I would stay away from Smith and Wesson Autos (some may disagree). I got rid of mine because of jamming even after fixing it through a licensed S&W repair shop.
Just go to a gunshop and ask the sales person to see and hold some of their top sellers or suggested firearms and see which one you like the best. The one that feels best in your hand is the one you will shoot well with. Hope this helps and good luck....

Before you do buy a gun, you should ask yourself, what would you like to use your handgun for? Do you want one to take to the shooting range. If so, try and find a double action revolver in .22 caliber. Are you interested in a handgun for self-defense? If that's what you're after, try a handgun like a .38 special double action revolver because they don't kick too much and a revolver is your best bet starting out. By the way a good maker of double action revolvers without breaking the bank is Taurus. Some good models made by Taurus are the model 94 in .22 caliber if you're into target shooting and the Taurus model 82 in .38 special if you're want a handgun for self-dfense.

I just asked this question about a month ago! I just got my first handgun which is a Springfield XD .9mm. It was about $500, came with a case, 2 16 rd. mags, a belt holster and a speed loader. Before buying this gun, I shot GLOCKS, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, and a WALTHER. NONE compared to the Springfield XD.

A glock 20 is probable your terrific wager for a hand cannon of that high quality. 10mm has one heck of a kick. in case you do not in straightforward terms like the kick then you definately could desire to head with a .forty Smith and Wesson that's definitely a shortened version of a 10mm.
