Yes, she needs to go to the vet. Take a stool sample with you. Can be worms. Could be something is stuck in her throat. Every new dog needs a well pet exam before you integrate them into your home and family. It sounds like the animal rescue wasn't on top of things or she would not have come to you with fleas. Who knows what else they have missed. She also needs her immunizations. If she hasn't started now is the time to begin them.
She is lucky that she found a home with someone like you. You are concerned about her and willing and able to get her what she needs.

Don't be taking medical advice from people at pet stores - they're sales people, not vets!! Bathing in dish soap was dumb advice, it doesn't treat fleas.
Go to a vet. It's unlikely this problem is related to the dish soap, unless she swallowed some very recently. The coughing and hacking could be froma number of problems, like heart or lungworm, or kennel cough. Is she vaccinated? Wormed?
While your at the vets, pick up some actual flea treatment, like Frontline - although you can't used it until 48 hours has passed from the time of bathing. Get the cough sorted in the mean time.

She has kennel cough, take her to your vet have them give her an antibiotic shot, a dex shot, have them send home some cough tabs......kennel cough is very contagious among canines so if you have other canines in your home you may want to keep them seperated. It can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to get over kennel cough. If it goes untreated it can develop into an upper respitory infection. Be careful with the dish soap it can be harsh on the skin. You can ask the vet for a capstar it will start to kill any fleas on her in 30 min and will continue to work for 5 hours then you can treat with revolution or frontline......revolution is cheaper because it treat for heartworm, fleas, ticks and other parasites. Good Luck!

It could be a reaction to the flea medication or it could be a case of kennel cough (the vaccine does not work against all forms) that just happened to occur at this time.
Take the dog to your vet. No one can make a diagnosis on line. Never be afraid to call your vet.

By the way you described it ; it sounds like your dog may have kennal caugh. Kennal caugh is most common in puppies after coming from a pound or were many other dogs are kept Kennal caugh is viral so it is not air born I would suggest you give it some penisilin if its a small puppy cut it in half and hide it in a hot dog so you dont have to shuv it down her throat if she dosent feel better in a few days or the caughing leads her to vomit thats a good chance she has parvo in that case TAKE HER TO THE VET!. Parvo is extremely deadly to dogs so keep waching her and se if it just a littale tickle in her throat.

My dog coughs once in a while too. It usually happens after he drinks a lot and moves after. It would be a good idea to check her out at a vet since she was adopted. Try giving her water to drink more often. She might have a dry throat and that does happen sometimes.

You need to get her to a vet.
It sounds like she may have kennel cough (severe coughing and retching ). Kennel cough is very contagious, so please TELL THE VET BEFORE YOU BRING HER IN.
Kennel cough is typically caught by an animal in places like the vets office, kennels, rescues, etc.
Kennel cough is easily treatable with medications.
