What kind of dog house do you have? What kind of dog? Is the doghouse in a sheltered location out of wind? Some doghouses are insulated and keep out the cold and wind on cool nights. Some are just doghouses with no insulation. These are only good for shade and for an outside place for your dog to call home. Some breeds like Huskies are made for the outside and probably would be miserable in the house when they are used to being outside.
Toy breeds and many if not most other breeds are not designed for being outside in cold weather even with a good dog house.
I think:
Every dog outside needs a good insulated doghouse to protect from heat and cold if they are outside more than just to briefly exercise and potty.
Unless a breed is specifically designed for outside, cold weather they should not be left outside when the temp is 45F.
All dogs deserve and need human contact in addition to feeding and grooming. If not brought inside then the owner needs to spend some quality time outside with their dog.

What kind of dog is it??? That will help to determine when the dog should be inside. If your family are all in agreement about bringing the dog inside for the winter, why don't you just allow the dog inside all year?

Ok...if it is a very short haired dog, most of them are not meant to live outside in the dead of cold winters. They don't have the coat or under coat to protect them. If the dog is something like a Malamute, Siberian, Chow, Akita, Great Pyranese...etc. It can withstand quite a bit of cold but if it's a cold and rainy or drizzly winter day, the rain will chill the dog too much and it shouldn't be left out in it. If the dog is to be outside during the day, I would insulate that dog house and put cedar chips and straw in it on the floor. The cedar chips will keep the fleas away in the warmer weather and the straw works as insulation for the dog to lay on. You will want to be sure his water source remains unfrozen too.

I have 2 German Shepherds that were born and raised outside. They stay outside on all but the coldest and rainy days. They start to get restless if they are inside too long. They both have dog houses that I put about 18 inches of straw/hay in their dog houses during the winter. They are warm and dry in their dog houses.
I can get fairly cold where I live in the desert at night in the winter, but they do fine. They are well fed and have plenty of clear, clean drinking water all year round!!!

i'm questioning while somebody calls animal administration and your mom finally ends up with an excellent or worse that would make her convey the canine in. Neither of those breeds are outdoors canine. it is going to wind up very ill if no longer worse while wintry climate somewhat comes. it somewhat is a mixed breed canine and should no longer be bred. Spay the canine and produce it interior. If no longer this small canine in all probability gained;t see spring inspite of a doghouse. no longer basically is it open to the climate of wintry climate it is likewise open to each form of ailment and in possibility of adjusting into prey for yet another animal. regrettably this looks like merely yet another case of the infants having greater experience than the be certain. Your mom could under no circumstances have agreed to a canine if she did no longer choose it to be interior.

Bottom line is that your dog should be inside with you now, and probably always. The dog wants to be with you, why have one if you're going to put it outside by itself?

i dont understand leaving a dog out. it may not seem like an answer to your question but it is. the answer is let your dog inside after it has gone to the bathroom outside and is ready to come in year round. at least you are bringing him in for the cold i suppose.

dogs can live happily outside-my dog is alway outside due to my parents rules. they won't allow pets in the house. my dog would not be happy being confined to a house. SHe gets loads of walks, playtime and attention. She get lots of love and has plenty of toys.

I'm in GA so our dogs could survive all year. I would never let them sleep outside if it is below freezing although I know they can handle lower than that.

If you feel you should ask this question, there's some doubt in your mind. Just bring him in.

How about, "better safe than sorry."

Don't you think he'd be more comfortable inside?
