My friend says if you are too clean then your body loses resistance to bugs and infection it could fight off. He thinks a little dirt is good for us. Does this make sense to you or is he crazy?
He thinks its funny that his grandson drops food on the garage floor then eats it.

Concerning his grandson, your friend has an odd sense of humor. His grandson could be picking up more than just dirt with dropped food. The garage floor you say? And he finds that funny......

It's fine to clean your environment. It's very fine to use hand sanitizers as long as they contain no less than 60% alcohol. It's probably even fine to use antibacterial dish soap although chronic use of any antibacterial soap may increase resistance in pathogenic bacteria present on the skin.

Keeping yourself and your environment clean will not weaken your immune system. You are exposed to millions of bacteria, viruses and fungi on a daily basis. It cannot be avoided unless you live in a bubble. A little dirt won't hurt you, true, and you will be exposed to "dirt" even if you are clean. But your body's resistance will not be weakened by good hygiene practices. In fact, it can keep you healthier. Your friend has a primitive belief that should be discarded but I doubt that it would even be worth it to try to change his mind. Leave him be.

It is a good idea to add 1 or 2 tablespoons of bleach to your dish water. Sunlight dish detergent and bleach are ok together. The bleach will kill quite a bit of the bacteria.
