Make your own decision, yes there is a war going on. You may get killed or injured, but that's the facts you have to accept when you join the military. I can't tell why you should join or not, that is something that you have to do by your self.
I was the same as you when I was growing up, I've always wanted to be a Marine. I was a small guy growing up, as a senior in high school I weighed 119 lbs. Everyone told me I was to small to make it, plus I wanted to be in the Infantry. It's been 10 years and I am still proving them wrong and I am enjoying my time as a Marine. At times it sucks but I suck it up and I am now a part of history. I was with 3/1 when we crossed into Iraq and when we went through Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury. I served with great men and made some good friends.

Your vision is not a problem. You can be a fighter pilot with 20/50 vision. They're full of it.
If you want to be a marine, then by God be a marine. I'd tell you to eaxmine all your options with the other branches, and with guard/reserve, before you commit. I don't know what your life objectives are. If you want the experience and training but are primarily in it for the education benefits, then go guard/reserve. If you want active duty and want to get in the fight then go and do that. Just figure out what you want from your life, what job you want to get, and go do it. Don't let other people define your life for you, take control of your own desitny and grab what you're led to do.

The easiest way to answer your vision question is to call a local Marine recruiting station and ask them what the requirements are.
If you become a Marine today the odds are pretty good that you will end up in Iraq. That doesn't mean you will be killed or wounded, but that will be something that you will have to deal with as a possiblity. However, what most people don't know is that surviving the war is usually the easy part.
If you want to become a Marine, bear in mind that the Marines aren't simply the ads. I know many Marines and they are fine men and women, but they are men and women not superheroes, and they carry their experiences with them for a lifetime.

The Sergeant is correct talk to a Marine recruiter. I live with an Army recruiter. He's a veteran of two wars. He'll tell you the honest to God truth. Sometimes it sucks. But there are certain benefits to the Military as well.
The only way to see if you can pass the physical stuff is to face it head on.
As far as the other issues, entering the Military is serious. That's why everyone who is in our Armed Forces is a hero. Especially now a days on these "Peace Keeping" and "Nation Building" missions.

Being a Marine is your dream not theres. The only person who knows what is best for you..... is you. The chances of going to war are always there for the military that can not be your deciding factor with joining the military, what do you want. There comes a time when you step out on your own, and if they are true friends they will support you decision. Do not live your life with regrets based on the opinions of a select few. Best of luck to you, and follow your dreams.

If your vision is correctable with glasses you can enlist.
My son also got some flack from people he knew at school. He learned to just keep his mouth shut about his enlistment... and when he came home from boot camp, from schooling, and from Iraq, his friends all threw a party for him. They were reacting to the fear they felt, the liberal propaganda about the likelihood of being fatally wounded over there, and their own insecurities.
Talk to a recruiter, take a look at what MOS's best fit your skills and interests, and see where your interest lies after that. You DO NOT have to enlist after meeting with the recruiter... just make sure you ask lots of questions about what jobs are available, what training is required, etc.. so your decision is an informed one.
As for the "friends," you'll learn to accept the fact that you're willing to put your life on the line for them to shoot off their mouth about something that's really none of their business. And you'll learn to handle it with grace and tact. Other than that, just let it go. My son will leave the Corps after his enlistment is over... but he doesn't regret enlisting. He knows it's made him grow up and be the man he was intended to be, years before he'd have done that on his own!!

You answered your own question!! they are a bunch of idiots!. Follow your dream because if you listen to other people instead to do what is in your heart you are not living your life to its fullest. Ignore the 'idiots' and go and join they will tell you if you can or cannot join because of your vision, they might even have other options for you if the vision thing is a problem. Good Luck and Follow your heart its your destiny

First of all, if they are idiots then they aren't very good friends. True friends are supportive of whatever decisions you make. It's your life. Don't live it in regret once you realize that it's too late. You won't be pleased with yourself if you look back someday and don't do what you've always dreamed about doing. You already know that if you join you will be deployed. The chances of actually dieing are slim. You could die tomorrow in a car crash. You are going to die someday, why not die with honor?

20/50 vision? Are you serious? I've heard of worse - just pop some glasses on and you'll be perfectly eligible!
If they're going to spring all that "You're going to war to die!" crap, what makes you think they'd be a reliable source of information in regards to the medical and physical requirements?
If you want to be a Marine, go see a recruiter and he'll tell you if you're suitable.

If you listen to your friends all your life, you will never go anywhere. You will just be bitter and won't know anything. If you do not enlist and expand your horizons, you will regret it for the rest of your life.
20/50 vision is fine. I joined the Army with 20/100 in one eye, and 20/200 in the other eye. With glasses (RPGs-Rape Prevention Goggles), I can put four rounds in a man's chest at 300 yards with an M-16A1 rifle.
God bless the U.S. Armed Forces and all who serve. May God continue to bless this country!
