General US Grant was a fine commander of course as was Gen Sherman. I heard or read a comment once By Pres Lincoln when discussing Grant's drinking he said that he would find out what Grant was drinking and give some to the other union Generals. On the southern side in my opinion the generals were better. Lee, Stuart, and Jackson were all top notch commanders.

The best Calvary leader supposedly in all history was Southern General Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was a brilliant tactician and commander. He methods of cavalry were used as a basis for the forming of the US Army Air Cavalory. He was also one hell of a bigot. He helped form the Klu Klux Klan.
