I am from America and am facinated by the Indian culture and wish to someday travel to India. I respect the Indian culture and religions of India and also wish to learn at least one of the Indian languages. I also want to know if anyone that answers my question practices meditiation or some other spiritual practice like psychokinesis?
I would also be happy to answer anyone's question through my email address on my profile or through the IM.

I've an Outsourced Office in Bangalore, India; and know a bit about this, so, here goes.

There are over 64 languages in India where Hindi is the National Language, and, like the teenager said, most educated people speak English.

I've learnt quite a bit of Hindi, over the past couple of years, and the local language here, Kannada.

Frankly, I didn't find them too tough to learn, though I did make some bloomers at first. The Indians are quite friendly and have a sense of humor, so it was alright.

The "Spiritual" India might be a disappointment, however, since they aren't really fakirs practising the esoteric arts there.

Most of the City folk are totally Westernized and know as much about yoga, meditation and the occcult as any Yank!?

Most of the "Gurus" are as phoney as a three dollar bill, by the way. All the "ethnic" stuff is for the tourists who come here expecting India to be the kind of imaginary thing they have the impression it's going to be. Trust me, I know, because my German friends know more about Yoga and the Indian esoterics than most Indians do.

On the whole, though, I'd say that India is worth going to, if you want to learn new things and make new friends.

All the best.

Well, if you know english you can communicate in almost all cities and towns. most of the people in south india can converse in rudementary english (worst case). your biggest problem may be the accent, and speed at which you speak. Speak slowly and clearly to negate accent. Most of the people do know a bit of english. if you can manage to learn Hindi, then you can travell through out north india with out problems.

Meditation is good. I practice it. it calms the mind.

psychokinesis - not sure what it is, if it is something like telekinesis, thats all imagination, does not exist. dont worry ur self with that stuff. lots of fraudsters every where who tell u they can teach u the stuff, they'll just cheat u, not only in india but every where in the world.

if u really want to learn hindi i have a simple solution....
get a hindi movie with english sub titles and watch it a couple of times ull understand the language.
thats the way it is used not the text book version.

hope this helps...

Factual matters have been cleared by Simon. But I do not agree with his subjective conclusions. The test of pudding is in it's eating. You come down to India, Stay in truely ethnic atmosphere and draw your own conclusions. Do not fall in trap of some Guru for spiritual attainment. You would attain it with comman Indians. Best luck.
