Pancakes and waffles are made from the same batter, but pancakes are cooked on top of grease/oil and waffles are "baked" in a waffle iron giving it a different texture and taste.

Outside of the obvious difference in shapes, there IS a difference in the recipe.
I forget exactly what it is. (Talking homemade now). But the next time your in a supermarket, read the directions on a box of Pancake mix. They have 2 different recipes. One for waffles and 1 for pancakes.
Oil is definetely used for one of them.
It's very close but there is a slight difference.

The batter is very similar and they can be interchanged. But in the restaurant I cooked in we did use a little malt powder in the waffle batter. Of course they are then cooked in two different ways and I do think the extra surface area on the waffle gives you More caramelized surface, therefore a slightly different flavour.

After a little research I found your answer.

Pancakes are comparable to waffles without syrup traps, although waffles often contain more eggs and are cooked in a waffle iron.

Other than one having little squares and one being flat, I don't think they really taste different. Some people may have different recipies for each...but they are still basically the same ingredients.
