I am a sailor and if your submerged to the head in cold water (below 59 degrees) it is rapid and deadly. under 60 degrees you have about an hour to live. If the water temp is below freezing its about 15 min.

Hypothermia is the leading cause of death by weather.
It means that the body temperature (the core) becomes too low to maintain a heart beat, resulting in confusion, a coma, then death.
Mostly it occurs at temperatures in the 50s and 60s. It is often associated with wetness: falling into a stream/lake, being in the rain; being in snow and the snow melts, making one wet; or, more likely, from sweating due to being dressed too warmly.
