I have an adult cat who recently had a litter of kittens.
The kittens are old enough to eat by themselves and go to new homes (3 of them actually just went to their home today - we have 1 left), but the mom is still lactating so the kittens still sometimes have her milk.
When can I get her fixed?
Should I wait until all the kittens are to their new homes? How can I tell when she is done lactating after the kittens are gone?

Thanks bunches! I've been wanting to get mommy fixed for awhile, and I want to get it done before she manages to escape outside again.

If the kittens are old enough to be weaned...over 8-10 weeks old, I'd be considering having the mother spayed.

I'd definitely consult a vet first who can advise whether you need to wait for the mother to stop lactating or whether the sterilization will accomplish this for you.

Cheers :)

If you're not sure, you can call your vet and ask. I believe the cat can be spayed pretty much anytime now. Pretty soon, she's going to start pushing the remaining kitten away and go into heat again.

Just call a vet about the spaying and they can tell you if it can be done right away and if the surgery will deprive the remaining kitten of milk.

um, i would wait maybe a week, i think my cat is pregnant and apparently you have experienced a pregnant cat, it would help a lot if you could e-mail me or something or i could just ask it up on the cats section.
