I go to a military college, and I have been learning army battle drills 1-6. Are these even taught in basic or infantry AIT anymore? Most of the operations today are MOUT.

Most operations today are MOUT? Is that so?

The invasion of Iraq was mostly conventional field warfare. As was Afghanistan, and the subsequent skirmishes in its ongoing occupation. Attacks in Iraq frequently occur outside urban areas.

What good is an army that can't make it in the field? How can you reach the towns and cities and fight there without going through the field? Standard battle drills are still very much relevant.

What will happen if the next country you go to war with decides they'd rather shelter and fight in the snow-laden forests of Finland, the bush of Australia or the jungles of the Philippines? All your urban-specialised infantry in their gray camouflage and minimal battle drill training won't be of much use.

Yes, they're still taught and still very relevant. It'd be pointless to change around your whole tactics and training regime just because one war out of many is out of the ordinary.

The battle drills you are talking about are out of FM 7-8 (Rifle Platoon and Squad) and yes it is very important to learn these. These are basic battle drills that can be carried into any situation (even MOUT, in fact Battle Drill 6 is enter building/clear a room). Fix and Flank is the basic concept which is also used in urban areas. This manual is tried and true.

As a REMF for 9 years I can state that you did not get any Advanced Infantry in Basic or the refresher stuff I went thru. I know what you are talking about though. I am sure that you are not wasting your time. Does what you are learning apply to the newer stuff like the village at Ft. Carson I read about, don't know. Hopefully someone with some more recent experience will see your question.

Yes they absolutely are taught at basic and ITB. FM7-8. Yes they are still used in the real world. The manual is just the basics, and does include mout along with a lot of other stuff. Obviously in reality you'd rather blow a buncker with an airstrike than attack with infantry, but that's not always possible for any number of reasons. Squad and platoon attack, enter room/clear building... yeah that's all for sure still in practice.

my son just finished basic, and he has no idea what you are talking about. says perhaps as you are in college they are teaching you the historical stuff, a method to help you understand how the military grows and changes by having you experience the changes yourself.
