No one should have to live with chronic pain today. Keep seeing doctors until you find one that'll help you. If necessary, go on drug therapy. I refused to live with horrible hot optic nerve pain. Today I live on MSContin and Fiorinal W/Codeine, but that's just fine. I can laugh and enjoy my friends and family. Life is not worth living if you have to stay in bed not being able to talk to anyone all day.

Find a doctor who isn't AFRAID to help you with drug therapy, unless of course they can find a cure. Good luck to you, my friend. I'll say a prayer for you tonight. Sincerely, Lynn :)

Hi Kimberly,

I have the same problem, and have recently switched from a pain management specialist to a surgeon. Typically, an annular tear will heal itself, but sometimes it won't. I'm one of the lucky few who's symptoms worsened instead of healed. I've tried physical therapy, yoga, epidural steroid injections, and have recently undergone a discogram. I am probably looking at surgery.
The steroid injections and yoga classes were an excellent pain reliever in the beginning, and I would recommend going that route if possible. I may have surgery, but it will be an absolute last resort. I've given the pain over a year, and instead of getting better it has worsened.
You do not have to live with the pain. If you have health insurance, start with your local physican, ask for a recommendation for a pain management specialist. They'll help you work through the pain until it heals, or until it is time to take more agressive measures. There are TONS of options available that you can research on your own, including discectomy, IDET, artificial disc replacement, vertebral fusion, and more. I would strongly recommend starting with the least invasive method possible, and look into surgery only if you run out of options.
Living with pain is not a reasonable expectation, and it wears on you. Don't let someone tell you that there is no hope!

I believe there is a surgical procedure that can repair this particular injury - of course, if you're one of the forty-five million folks lacking health insurance, you're up the creek, hon. You can thank your Republi-freak Congress and President-select for that!
