Well if the cats name is toast the answer is obvious, but I know from experience that the cat will simply land on its feet and then lick the butter off

This is the first time I have laughed today. Thank you. But how are you going to manage to get butter on it's back? And I think it will land the same.

The cat is not a piece of toast - therefore, it would still land legs-down.

Here's an idea. Climb to the highest building. Spread your feet with butter. Jump off. Let us know how it turns out.

my lovely and talented wife would not like the idea of the mess it would make buttering a cat's back, and i think it may upset the cat, too. at any rate it would be a mess, i wouldn't try it.

It will lay down on a piece of toast and then stand up with the toast stuck on its back, butterside down.
Or maybe it will lick it's back
Or maybe the universe will end
