How do I give my dog a pill?

Question

I am suppose to give a pill to my dog and I don't know. My dad was suppose to but he went away (travel) and i forgot to tell him to teach me. My dog is 5 years old and he is a pomeranian. Can anybody help with this if they have experience.

Small pills can be easily hidden inside a piece of sausage.

Another method is to open the animals jaw, head tilted upwards and drop the pill in towards back of throat before holding jaw shut and massaging throat.

You can always of course pulverise the tablet into powder and mix in with a wet dog food, sausage meat or something similar.

If the oills can be crushed then you can hide them better.Check with the vet before doing this however as some pills will not work effectively crushed.My guy will eat off of a spoon so we use pudding.vanilla yogourt, wet dog food,fruit dip,applesauce,pureed pumkin & creamy salad dressings. It's soft enough to coat the pill without them separating it.You can rotate the items to prevent her from becoming finicky.Use only a small spoonfull & use it like you would a treat.Watch the ingredients closely & make sure you avoid things with artificial sweeteners,chocolate & all the other deadly people foods.You don't have to use a spoon,you can use a plate or bowl.If they have to lick it up,their less likely to pick out the pill.

Yes many dogs won't take a pill as is even when you open there mouths and put it in then hold your hand over there mouth shut..

Here are some things to do that will work. Use peanut butter and coat the pill inside a big hunk of peanut butter he'll take it all and won't notice the pill is inside.

You can also wrap it over a piece of chicken . or put it inside a; wiener and cut up the wenier for him making sure he takes the one with the pill on it.

Those will work for sure.

Find a food that he really likes (hot dog/cheese/chicken)

What I do is slightly warm up a piece of string cheese, give the dog a couple of pieces (make a game out of it) without the pill, then give him a piece with the pill in it and another piece without the pill. He should take it down without thinking twice about it.

we have poms... put it in a piece of cheese slice, fold it over and give the dog a piece without the pill, followed by a piece with the pill... usually works great... if not, make dog sit in front of you with
head facing away from your chest. Grasp muzzle, pull up toward your chest using the index finger and thumb pry open muzzle, and with pill in other hand drop it down to back of throat and snap muzzle shut, hold muzzle till dog swallows. Its not hard just requires some coordination and practice.

My dog needed pills after getting fixed. What we did was we ctut a small peice of string cheese the length if the pill. Then we folded the pill in the cheese. He swallowed the cheese whole without even noticing the pill!

Hide it in a hotdog if they like them. They also sell pill dispensers that you insert into their mouth and push the pill down the back of the throat. That may be the best method because the dog is so small.

Pom = small, so sit on the couch or better a chair with arms (less wiggle room) with the dog between your legs, his butt in your lap, face out, take 1 hand and hold his snout, prying his mouth open and tilted up, drop the pill as far down his throat as possible. Close the mouth quickly and keep it closed, keeping the head tilted up, use your free hand to gently stroke his throat down (make sure you do not stroke up) as the stroking will help him to swallow the pill and not spit it up. With a large dog you have to down it with the dog snug between your knees. Good luck, it gets easier with practice. Have to do the same thing with the cats.

You can try just offering it out of your hand as if it is a treat. If that doesn't work, you might try mixing it with some canned food. What works best for me is to wrap it in a small piece of cheese because my dogs love that. If all else fails, you will just have to pry her mouth open and stick it far back in her mouth so that she has to swallow it. Good luck to you.

Fold it in a slice of cheese and smash it in there with your hands to slightly melt it so it doesnt fall out or put it in a small piece of bread with a thin layer of peanut butter or take a hot dog and cut a small piece and make a slit in it with a knife and shove the pill into it.
