"Dear Lord: I'm going to go out there and commit as many homicides as I possibly can in the shortest amount of time. Please bless me with your favor. Amen."
Yeah I don't understand it either.

They aren't really praying to God at that point... They are simply speaking to their own freudian super-ego. It's rather schizophrenic when you really think about what that means... I think the only time people are REALLY praying to God is when they've had a pretty good day and they are saying thanks. But when people ask for things or want reassurance, they are simply employing the bargaining techniques they were taught as children. It's like not getting the results you expected, so now you're gonna go and ask Daddy instead of Mommy and you're gonna play "let's make a deal". You'll probably promise to give up smoking, or donate all your money to orphans, etc... But it's not really a prayer... it's a scam that you are audacious enough to think might work on God since your parents have already wised up to it or died...

My guess is that you have never been in combat.
There are no atheist in a fox hole. Death is on the menu daily. Every mission you know someone will die. You pray it's not you or yours. You pray that God is on your side and guiding your steps and that his angels are surrounding you and that all is well at home.
The first time I ever prayed was in combat.
God never seemed so real and so close. You pray while being strong you can keep your morality.
We weren't as open then as they are today, we had never prayed in a group unless the Chaplin was on hand, But I saw many doing what I was doing (PRAYING)

I prayed before going to sea, when at sea, after safely returned home, and on dry land. Many if not all of my shipmates did too, individually or with me when I said mass on Sundays. I know the family members back home did too.
Today I still:
usually pray before doing anything stressful - so I don't make mistakes and hurt people.
pray before entering the freeway, as I battle the commute, and when I get off the freeway for surviving the battle.
Peace.

well, i am not actually a soldier, but i would say that soldiers pray before the battle(s) for them to win the combat over their opponent(s) - with the inclusion of protection, guidance, wisdom, and anointing. as for me, this is the best thing to do. prayers are very powerfull that it can do things way beyond our expectations. our capabilities may be bounded by limits but prayers are not. for it is already God who is moving. a guaranteed victory is what prayers can bring - it is just a matter of faith.
god bless! =)

I believe a soldier earns the right to pray if he chooses, after all he is the defender of that very freedom.

Even though soldiers are about to kill they aren't sinning. They are protecting their family and they are protecting their country. Soldiers want the holy grace of God to protect them and give them strength.
When suicide bombers pray before they blow up a building that is still a sin.

I have never met a man who didn't say a little prayer in the sandbox. It doesn't matter who you are; when you're riding into a place where everyone wants to kill you... you find your own personal deity.

You will be condemned by your own words,
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. Luke 3:14

For strength, for protection, for wisdom, and for their enemies to fall quickly so there will not be as many lost.

They pray for the same reason they sometimes carry a lucky charm.... it's because they don't want to die and they'll try anything to avoid it no matter how ridiculous it may seem.
