If you teach a dog to be aggressive it'll be agressive. If you teach a dog how to be nica it'll be nice.It depends on how you train your dog.My dog is fine without the leash and when he sees another dog I just call him and he just stays with me and not run off to attack the other dog.Dog are are very smart animals you can train them however you want.

I have an Akita. She's been impeccably trained because a dog that big needs to be trained well. She is not agressive at all and is incredibly friendly for the breed. Rub her back and she's putty in your hands. I would never let her off the leash, however, because I can never be 100% sure that she would not run off and explore. I doubt she'd ever attack anyone or anything, but she's led a very sheltered life in terms of health hazards for dogs. Most of her experience with cars has been from the inside of one. When we are walking, she stops at intersections because she's with me and she knows that's what you do. I don't think she'd stop if she were alone. She doesn't know not to pick on a porcupine or skunk. She doesn't know that somethings are NOT to be eaten or that you need to stay away from some areas. I'd rather keep her on a leash in the city or a long lead when we go on a hike. That way I know she's safe and can call her back to me when I need to. Better safe than sorry, in my opinion.

I'm not very familiar with Akita's, but as has been said, it's a dog = prey driven animal so it is quite possible. With good solid training, dogs can be voice controlled... but personally, I still wouldn't let my dogs off lead regardless of how obedient THEY are. You never know what other dogs that are around will do, or people for that matter.
If this is in fact characteristic of the breed, kudos to your friend for being responsible and keeping their dog (and others) safe.

some breeds are just NOT trustworth off leash, even with training.
Some breeds excell at obedience, and with training, can be trusted.. but some breeds, including Akitas, Huskies and Malamutes are never trustworthy offleash.
They are smart dogs, but too much of a "whats in it for me?" They'd rather go run, explore and meet other dogs/ people and chase after small animals than get a pat on the head, a treat, and a "good dog" from you.
Also, never trust ANY dog 100% I know of a lady who is a dog trainer, and although her dogs are excellent at recall, she uses electric remote trainer collars "just in case". She has never had to use them to correct her dogs, but they are there for extra insurance when she does have her dogs off-leash.

Akitas are very aggressive as a breed, and I think the owner is 100% able to make the decision as to whether or not their dog is trustworthy in the situation around them. If they say no, then it's no.

Some dogs and some breeds in general are not very trustworthy. Akitas, in general, tend to be dog aggressive. And very few people have REAL off lead control of their dog, they just think they do. I say your friends are being responsible dog owners.

There are breeds that are designed to be obedient to people and are trustworthy off leash. Then there are breeds that are designed to be independent and not listen to people (dog bred to work on their own) like hounds and terriers. I would say that you should be 100% confident in your own yard (fenced) and in training situations where you can control the escape before you experiment with your dog.

Some dogs are just runners, no matter what you do. You can train and train and train; some dogs just want their freedom. Dogs are not innately happy to be in cages or fences, and not all dogs ever adjust to it.
Can you train all children to never leave their hometowns?
