it was the jewish high priests who sent jesus to pontius pilot to be crucified (sorry about the spelling)

He was crucified under Roman Law. The charges had something to do with destruction of property and trying to incite a riot with maybe disturbing the peace when he entered the Temple of Jerusalem and drove out the merchants and money changers, scattering merchandise, money, and broken tables everywhere. These folks were doing business in the Temple itself. These guys were giving part of their profits to the Priests there to rent space and as bribes. Which is why the Priests didn't like it. The Chief Priest brought the charges before the Roman Governor. Now as Jesus was trying to ruin the income that kept the Priests in the style to which they had become accustomed. They didn't like it. What Jesus disliked about the business in the Temple was that it was becoming less a place of worship and more like the local shopping mall. If the merchants and money changers were doing their business outside the Temple grounds he'd have had no problem with it.
Now all these guys got together and demanded that Jesus be gotten rid of just because of the destruction he caused to their incomes.
And in those times Roman Law could demand an execution for such acts.
Same as Texas used to hang horse thieves.

Now does it make some sense?

The roman authorities crucified jesus at the behest of the pharisees. Why Pontius Pilate let a few religious leaders tell him what to do is beyond me.

So no, it wasn't the 'jews' who killed him. It was a small group of jewish fundamentalists religious leaders who disagreed with him and instigated it. Let everyone be clear on that.

And don't forget, the first christians were jewish, as was jesus.

Who killed Jesus? Some people say the Jewish people or Roman soldiers killed Jesus but they are wrong. All the people of the world killed Jesus. He came here to save us all so we can go to heaven. He died for the whole world so that when we die we can go to heaven and live with God. All we have to do is believe in Jesus and we will go to heaven. We should try to remember to pray and read the Bible everyday.

How young?

If they're old enough to ask the question, tell them the truth.
No one killed Jesus!
He gave up his life for the world, so that we, in our fallen state could once again be close to our Creator. He gave himself willingly is the teaching of the Bible.

On the other hand it was the Jewish leaders who beat him while questioning him and then later the Roman solders who tortured him before crucifying him at the request of the Jewish people.

It was an accident. He was just hangin with some friends .....

Really, he was killed by the authorities (Roman government) for seditious behavior uing their standard technique at the time for making a public spectacle out of what they considered a criminal.

It was the Jews and the Romans who did the acts and it was Jesus who willingly laid down His life for the whole world
to take away all our sins and iniquities and sickness and sadness and anything that would do us harm

Jesus(PBUH*) never died. Jesus(PBUH*) never said he was a God or a son of God. That was Paul who made Jesus(PBUH*) out to be a God. Jesus(PBUH*) was never trying to start a new religion. He was here to send the message of Islam to his people. He never told his followers to worship him and his mother as Gods above ALLAH(SWT) or beside ALLAH(SWT). ALLAH(SWT) is perfect and doesn't need sons or partners in worship with him. The Trinity is a false Pagan belief. I would ask the child if he or she thought that a man could make another human or one of ALLAH's(SWT) other creations? I would tell the child that ALLAH(SWT) is the one who made him or her and made everything in the Universe.

I would tell a small child that some very bad men killed Jesus. They thought that Jesus was going to cause problems for them, and instead of treating him fairly and hearing his side, they killed him. It was very wrong of them, but Jesus forgave them.

I would not bring religion into it. I hate it when people say, "The Jews killed Jesus." (They didn't. That's like saying that the Muslims killed every suicide bombing victim.) Jesus' death was not a matter of religion; it was a matter of politics. However, going into that would be over a kid's head.
