(besides your deity) to guide you in your spiritual life and to mentor you along your spiritual way, who would it be? Why?

Mine would be St. Joseph. I suspect he must've been a very pure and holy and wise man for God to choose him to be foster father to God the Son.

Besides my deity?

I'd have to go with John the Apostle. Jesus called him "His beloved." Jesus obviously had a special love for John and later his gospel and epistles are masterworks, beautiful poems to the love that Jesus taught him. I bet he'd be a great mentor.

Good question, but your answer, er, sucks.

My favorite guy is Ben Franklin. Can you imagine what a great mentor, what an inspiring guide, and how much of an honor it would be for me to have such an interesting, inventive, creative and intelligent person spend time with me? Here's someoen of sparkling wit, consummate grace, impeccable manners, and a definite way with the ladies!

I would have to pinch myself every day! Here's a REAL person, a multifaceted courageous gentleman who knows all about organizing things, being popular, helping people, and negotiating the peace.

My kinda guy!

St. Joseph is a great choice, Jon. But the problem is, like so many of the saints, we have only sketchy information about our Lord's adoptive father.

I've been reading and rereading the works of C. S. Lewis for several months. This Anglican professor from Oxford had a unique perspective on the faith he calls "mere Christianity." He always sought to find the common ground of Christian conviction, avoiding the flash points of disagreement.

Lewis's synthesis is very close to orthodox Catholicism; for example, he believed in heaven, hell, and purgatory. He not only believed, but used his faith in highly imaginative ways, e.g., to write the Screwtape Letters, perhaps the most complete image of the Devil in literature. Too, he wrote the wonderful series of children's books about Narnia that continues to bring Christ to children as Aslan.

As a guide in my spiritual life, C. S. Lewis has the special virtue of being a modern man, my near contemporary (he died in 1963). As such, he shines the light of Christianity on many of the problems we face today, such as the dilemma of war. A former atheist, Lewis explains Christianity in ways that are always fresh and persuasive.

Cheers,
Bruce

I would pick Epictetus because he was the one whose philosophy was about acceptance, and that I think is the ultimate wisdom, and yet the hardest to attain. Also, Einstein, because in a scientific world today, one must hold on to his spiritual life, and Einstein had the philosophy that incorporated the two together, and he thought that through science he could attain a level spiritually as well. 'I want to know god's mind, the rest are all details' I don't remember the exact quote, but it went something like this.

I pick Grandpa, Frank Fools Crow. During his lifetime, he was a great Oglala Lakota Holy Man and although he made the last journey in 1988, his spirit is alive and filled with love. Grandpa taught that humanity is connected and that we should love a respect all of nature. Grandpa taught us how to have pure hearts and treat others as we want to be treated. Grandpa was definitely a vessel used by the Creator to help humanity udderstand the meaning of coming full circle. Grandpa taught that together we stand or together we fall. Grandpa taught that each day we should walk in beauty because the spirit lives on. Check out the video below. Thanks

I consider myself fortunate to have the father that I do. We've never really talked about it, but as I grow older I realize that he's been a great spiritual guide/sometimes adversary.

St. Thomas for he is the closes to me for he doubted until he saw the holes, then he believed. It took an encounter but it was not a holy one.
