My son turns 3 on Saturday and I'm worried he's really behind with his speech. I know I'm not suppose to compare but it's hard not to when every child I encounter, even those who are 6 months younger seem to be far ahead of my son when it comes to speech. He will only say the last couple of words to a sentence or for example, he will say 'you're okay' but he's talking about himself. Even though I correct him time after time, he just doesn't seem to get it. Or he'll say 'goodbye Chase' (his name) instead of 'goodbye mom' but other times he will say it correctly. If he says something I can't understand and I say 'what', he just repeats 'what' back to me. I work with him on using sentences and correct responses but it doesn't seem to be working.

I just want to hear from others who might be experiencing the same issue and what you did.

I'm also a teenager still, but I studied the autism spectrum in great detail. this sounds a bit like echolalia, where a child will repeat what has been said to them, more to help them understand what has been said to them. Make sure that you are not talking down to your child, using baby voices, etc. this can hold kids back in their speech if that's all they hear. You should ask a professional in child development who can tell you much more about your son's development.

My daughter will be 3 in January and she just recently started putting long sentences together and coming up with her on responses. She still says "hold you" sometimes when she means hold me. My cousin's son had difficulties with speech and at one time was thought to have autism and had to go to speech therapy; he is now 9 years old and has been in regular classes and is doing well. I would get your son tested sooner than later so he won't be held back and this can be corrected before he goes to school. Check with his pediatrician on how to go about this because it's free through the school system. Good luck!

I woudl suggest that you ask your Dr for a referral for a speech evlauation. A speech therapist would be the best source to know if there is a delay or not. Proper grammar at this age isnt always there so keep working at it. If all he does is repeat what is said I would be looking at echoalia.
