They may need to be recalibrated. Turn of the controllers by pressing the ps button then select turn off controller.. Then wait a minute or two then turn the controller back on by pressing the center ps button again (do not have any other buttons pressed or any sticks moved while it searches and configures to the ps3. and see if that helps...

My cousin works for sony and this happened on my ps2 its not because it is to old its because of a loose circuit becuase of really hard gaming or you accidently dropped it you can get it fixed or buy a new one your chioce but yes it has happned to me

Because your controller is old, that buttons cann't be connected to the circuit.
