yet Europeans are much LESS religious.

What about America has given rise to this religious (mainly Christian) mania?

Interesting question.

I think Americans believe they are truly the 'chosen' people and are better than any other countries. It is this delusion that gives way to a lot of this religious overzealousness.

Not all Americans are like this. There are free thinkers, and even some sane Christians. :)

Isolation from the rest of the world in the early part of our history combined with our emergence as the world's main superpower after WWII, has made Americans feel somehow, more special, some would say blessed of god. I think we're just very lucky here myself.
Then there is the way religion has been mass-marketed here, like no where else in the world. This is, after all, the home of Madison Ave,... the marketing center of the world.
I'm sure there are many more reasons, but that is what comes to mind.

Polarization of our social and political philosophies plus tension with Muslims in the middle east plus desire for group identification for feelings of security.

Europe contains some of the most highly religious concentrated countries on earth. I think Poland has a .05% atheist rate or something like that. That said, Europe also contains *some* of the least religious countries as well, like Sweden.

IIRC China is the least religious country on earth, or at least it is up there.

Edit:

According to wiki: Italy has the smallest number of 'religious-less' people and South Korea has the largest number.

freedom of thought and speech, something many other countries profess to have but in reality do not have!
You have not heard the American Jewish Council on the radio if you think it is Pseudo-Christian only!...the American Jewish Council ...At least here in the greater Boston Area, had 1 hour or more of air time on local radio stations or better!

It's well organized, well funded and constant. It's quite like living in the USSR under Stalin at times. The things people accept are beyond logic.

Nobody can run for office and expect to win without declaring strong, STRONG faith.

It's pathetic. Not one of the candidates is worth voting for regarding the presidency.

I'm not sure why, but I don't really believe that Europe is as secularist/nonreligious as people would like to think.

Have YOU seen how bad things are in the US? They have nothing to look forward to, crappy healthcare, and are on the verge of startng WW3. I think ONLY God can help them now.

Well, Christians certainly aren't benign but at least most of them aren't as rabid as the muslims.
