I really need a modern song you can do a salsa or mambo to. Most salsa/mambo music is that old 50s stuff with no words and trumpets and stuff. I want a more modern, recognizable song. Please help and thanks!

I want it to be something you hear on the radio but it's still got to have the 2, 3, 4 hold or Quick Quick Slow hold beat

For example, a modern radio heard cha cha would be "Smooth" by Santana, featuring Rob Thomas. A lot of people know that song.

Rahh... you guys are giving pretty good suggestions, but still not quite what I'm looking for. Its actually for my dad's salsa. So far he could only come up with I'll Tumble For You by Boy George. He wants a song like that. One you could do a mambo or salsa to, but its not really expected, and a lot of people have heard it and its on the radio

Believe it or not, I would try anyone of the following:
"Shake Ya Tailfeather" by Nelly (from the Bad Boys II soundtrack) (You have to be "brain dead" to not hear the obvious Quick-Quick-slow mambo beat in this song)
"Pon De Replay" (radio edit) by Rihanna
"Medicine for my soul" by Juan Luis Guerra from his "La Llave De Mi Corazon" CD, has completely English Lyrics, and is a very moderately paced salsa song.
For something completely different, you may try "Just the two of us" by Paquito Hechavarria off of his "Piano" CD which came out in 1995. It is an all-instrumental SALSA remake of the Grover Washington Jr classic song.
Other well known "English Lyric" salsa songs you may try.
"Thats okay" by Marc Anthony
"You've been good to me" by Marc Anthony
"Bailalo Como Quieras" by N'Klabe from their recent "A Pinto De Estallar " CD album: the song contains english lyrics. And what the hey, it is N'Klabe, after all.
The following song is borderline mambo (some would say Samba more than mambo), but possible:
"Hey Mama" by Black Eyed Peas (a clean version of this song is available off of the "NOW That's What I Call Music #6" CD, I believe).
Good luck with your quest.

Have you tried hip-hop? The beat works, while most rock stuff is usually more like a cha-cha. I don't listen to as much of the mainstream hiphop, but perhaps a song like "Beautiful" by Pharrell (a bit slow perhaps). Or how about some funk, some can be quite fast, but a song like "Blind Man Can See It" by James Brown would be neat.
Don't forget that there are a lot of awesome salsa songs out there - have you heard songs like "Either You Have It or You Don't" by Charlie Palmieri or "El Son de la Madrugada" - Gilberto Santarosa. A song like "El Salsa Nunca Se Acabe" or "La Palomilla" I feel give a lot of opportunities to do your own styling a stuff.
Have fun. Will you post the performance?

If you are thinking Argentine Tango and want new stuff try Ochos Aires or Gotan Project, both are nuevo type bands that have distinctive flavor. Or look up Hyperion from Europe, or Mandragora Orchestra from Minnesota, those two have more of a traditional orchestral sound with a modern day twist. After that if you truly want a more traditional sound but recorded today then try Color Tango or one of my favorites, QuinTango. There are many different sounds, from nuevo to traditional, and levels in between. Listen to clips on the internet to determine which are for you. Good Luck!

How about "I Love Salsa" by N'Klabe - it is modern and recognizable.
Or "Mayor que Yo" by Michael Stuart - salsa version of the reggaeton song.

Check out the Tito Nieves selections. They are available on Limewire. You will notice the modern salsa songs by merely reading on the familiar song titles. Enjoy!
