Normally military personnel get tested before and after deployments, or on a six month schedule. Atleast that's how it works in the Marines.

Before enlistment, a Defence Doctor examines your genitals - among other things, that'll be useful for determining if you've got genital warts or herpes or something along those lines. Generally the part of enlistment nobody looks forward to.
After all the other tests and assessments are done, you have a blood test done - they'll suck a little bit from you using a needle, send it away for testing and that's that. That'll check for HIV/AIDS and the more serious forms of Hepatitis. This happens just before enlistment, soon after you start recruit training and usually once a year.

My husband gets tested for HIV every 6 months. By the looks of the other answers, not everyone gets tested.

I guess its different for each service reading the marines answer. My husband has been in the Navy for 8 years, and they never checked him for STDs, but do check for HIV before and after deployments.
If he thinks he has something he always has a doc he can go to and get tested from, but thats only when he wants too. They never forced/ask/suggested him too.

Ther get tested for HIV, however if they think they have acquired something, they simply go to the doctor.
