Start looking for one asap, that way you can start saving up money. I wouldn't buy it until at least 3 months prior to the wedding. Your size can change a lot in a few months; why pay for alterations if you don't have to!
*Edit* The first answer wasn't there before I posted mine! I swear! I think maybe I type slower!

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding almost two years ago. We bought our dresses one year before the wedding. We ended up purchasing them so far in advance because the consultant at David's said if we didn't order them at that time, we'd risk the style being discontinued. We ordered the dresses and they came in a few weeks later. I used a seamstress who worked out of her home rather than a seamstress at David's. A few other girls in the wedding party went to her as well, so she knew of our timeline and was willing to make the alterations closer to the wedding so there was no issue of gaining or losing weight.
David's, by the way, was AWFUL to deal with. They were extremely rude and after we placed our order, the "bridal consultant" could not have cared less about us or if we had what we wanted and needed.

If you are going with someplace like David's, you can wait until 2-4 months to look and buy (however, DON'T get alterations done there - they charge outrageous prices for alterations.)
If you are looking at ordering from an actual designer (such as Jim Hjelm, Lazaro or Bari Jay), you need to start looking 6-8 months ahead of time since these kind of dresses are custom made and can take anywhere from 4-6 months to come in.
Take into account if you're going to have the girls all wear the same dress (which may take them a while to agree upon) or have them wear different dresses by the same designer and in the same color.

I had a June wedding, and we ordered dresses in September for the bridesmaids. Only because I had two bridesmaids that were pregnant and they were both due in February. They told us not to order until they were four months because the wedding was four months after. (Must be some kind of bridal dress math.)
All of my bridesmaids live in all different parts of the country, so we had to have each of the fitted at bridal stores, then they sent their sizes to me, and i ordered the dresses. You have to order them all at the same time, or at a chain like David's Bridal, because then the colors will all be the same. I had a friend who ordered at David's Bridal, but they didn't tell them the wedding names, and two of the six dresses were a different shade of navy blue. You can't tell in pictures, but she said you could tell that day.
Hope this helped.

I would say that you should order the dresses at least 6 months before the big day. The reason for this is some orders take a few weeks to several weeks to receive and you want to make sure that your bridesmaids have plenty of time to have the dress altered. I have never worn a formal dress that I didn't need altered!! (and you need to allow at least 2 weeks for alterations to be complete!)
Also if any of your bridesmaids are out of state it may take longer for the dress to ship to their location. Better to be safe than sorry! But you can order them as early as you want.

Goodness no! Take it from a bride to be, presents should not be a requirement for shower guests. If you want to take a present to all 3 that would be fine. If you don't want to take presents to any shower, that's fine too! Keep in mind you are in her wedding and you already have to buy a dress to wear in it, and you are also throwing her a shower. If it were me, and I've been a bridesmaid a few times, I bought one gift for the couple no matter how many showers they had! You do what you want to and don't worry about it! :)

The bride went shopping with her sister and emailed me a picture of the dress about a year in advance. It later changed about 2 months later because they discontinued a particular style, but in any case....I ordered the dress in my size over the phone and put in my payment about 6 months in advance. The dress was ready to be picked up about 3-4 months in advance. The bride shipped the dress to me about 2 months before the wedding and I had the alterations done.

I started looking for a dress about 4 months before my wedding. Because I didn't want typical "bridesmaid" dresses but dresses that they could wear again, I got them at a regular clothing store. They all had their dresses within a week and half.

Shop for dresses as early as you want.
Wait until about two months before the actual wedding (depending on who is doing your alterations) to get them fitted. Bodies can change and you don't want to have to pay twice.
I've been a bridesmaid using David's Bridal twice. Both times it was a nightmare.

I think we went in May to pick out and order the dresses for the October wedding, it took a few months for the dresses to come in, we did our first fitting in August (once they measured us in May and ordered the dresses) and then did the second fitting about a month before the wedding.
This was for a bridesmaid's dress
