I am making Halloween bags for two of my babysitting clients; one is 3, the other is 4. If I include mini packets of gum (1-2 pieces of Trident Splash) can they eat it? Thanks!

I would say..YES / MAYBE

I would say YES..they are old enough to chew and understand not swallowing. Both of my children (on rare occassion) chew gum. With no swallowing problems, messy carpets, gum in hair, etc...

Although I do let my kiddos (3 & 4) chew on an occassional piece of gum, it's even rarer that they have candy. BUT...it is Halloween. The parents can pick and choose what will "remain" in the bag.

You may want to discretely call or ask the parents if it's ok to give the children a goodie bag / gum. This way, it will still be a surprise to the kiddos AND the parents are happy.

I know I would appreciate my babysitter asking first, and thinking ahead. :-)

It's really up to you, but I can tell you that my 4 year old daughter, just learned to not swallow gum, however, she's got it in her hair 2 or 3 times (she has long beautiful hair) it takes alot of patience to wash out the gum as oppose to cut it, and we have gum on 2 spots on the carpet, this all from her having gum 3 or 4 times, and "accidents" happening. Needless to say, there is a strong rule in our house that she is NOT to have gum!

Absolutely!
My daughter has been chewing gum since she was about 2, and has only swallowed it once. In fact we bought a little gum ball machine - and reward her with pennies when she helps with chores. She loves it!!! (and her dentist was surprised how clean her teeth are)

'chew the gum, swallow the water'

It all depends on the child. I know little children who are 3 years old who learned to chew gum. You should ask the children's parents if they can. Otherwise, maybe you should skip it. I'm sure the children would love more candy in their bags.

Yes, you just have to tell them not to swallow. My 3 year old swallowed a couple times, but when she saw her cousin just chewing she copied her and just chewed.

I'd skip it. I don't let my younger two who are that age chew gum. First, they don't understand not to swallow it, second, they're apt to get it in their hair, clothes, or carpet, and third, its a choking hazard. Go with lollipops or something to that effect. Good luck!

Yep, by three years old, they can pop it in their little mouths, chew and swallow. (This is NOT a bad thing, unless you believe urban legends).
