Did David have the Holy Spirit? Judging by his life, works, etc. I always kind of assumed David had the Holy Spirit. It seemed to go without saying. But then I realized, wait a minute.. David lived in the Old Testament, and God didn't pour out the Holy Spirit until after Jesus (in Acts). So that would suggest that people before that did not have the Holy Spirit. But some (David and others) had fruit of it. How is this?

During the days of the Torah, the Holy Spirit fell "upon" the believers of that day. This is represented by the anointing oil falling upon the priests.
This "coming upon" even happened to Saul prior to David--insomuch as they would say, "Is Saul among the prophets?" However, because of disobedience, the Spirit also left Saul. 1Sa 16:14
The Holy Spirit was indeed with David, and never left. In the case of the post-resurrection day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was no longer WITH the believer, but IN the believer. This is called the "in dwelling". Jesus said in Joh 14:17,

“the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you."

Before Christ was glorified, the Holy Spirit was WITH the disciples, much like David. However, during Pentecost, the Holy Spirit did something never seen in earth history, He came INSIDE the believer as a dwelling place.

Romans 8:11
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

I hope that answers your question sufficiently.

Yes he did. 1 Samuel 16:13; 2 Samuel 23:2; Matthew 22:43; Acts 1:16; Acts 4:25.

Many people in the Old Testament were lead by the Spirit, see, e.g., Exodus 28:3 (Moses), Exodus 35:31 (Bezalel); Judges 3:10 (Othniel); Ezekiel 2:2 (Ezekiel), which includes those who wrote the books in the Bible, 2 Peter 1:21; Matthew 22:29.

The Holy Spirit was promised to believers after Christ ascended to Heaven, John 16:7, but that does not mean that others did not have it and I am unaware of any verses in the Old Testament prohibiting the granting of the Holy Spirit to people.

They did have the Holy Spirit as a guide in the direction that they should be following Gods Plan, the Holy Spirit could not come and live inside the believer until the great event that happened in the book of Acts, which was poured out on the believers.

The old Testament speaks of people who had gods spirit.
It also speaks of Saul who had gods spirit taken away. When Jesus was on Earth and before the outpouring of spirit at Pentecost. The disciples of Jesus performed powerful works and expelled demons by means of Holy Spirit.
The outpouring in Acts gave The Holy Spirit to Christains as a helper to enable them to spread the good news. This does not mean that individuals before that time did not receive the spirit.

David had the Holy Spirit in a limited capacity. Man was not able to be born again, regenerated on the inside. Therefore they were not able to have the Holy Spirit on the inside of them. God dealt with them in a different way than He deals with us today. I believe God poured out his Spirit in a way that addressed the heart but ministered to them outwardly.

The Bible mentions the Holy Spirit in the OT many times, and since David was a prophet of God, he probably did have the HS. As for the thing in acts, that was revealing it to the apostles, who had to take Jesus' place. Since they were merely loyal followers before, they did not have the HS on the level of Jesus.

If you believe in God, you receive the Holy Spirit. David believed in God and yes the Holy Spirit was in David. David spent many hours alone, tending sheep, playing his harp and talking to God, the Holy Spirit. David was annointed by Samuel to be King. David was annointed by the elders of Israel as King. David was just as familiar with the Holy Spirit as we are today.

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit often came upon people for a time. But He did not stay like He does today.
