Yes that can happen. I have a daughter that is allergic to peanuts in any form, even peanut butter. She is so allergic that I can't eat it around her. Just the smell causes a reaction. Her lips will swell and gets hives. She used to work for McDonald's but being around the peanuts they put on the sundaes, had her in the hospital for 3 weeks. Now she is much better and more cautious.

Yes! Just having the peanuts in the room releases something into the air that is toxic to an allergic child. I work in a preschool and the allergy kids are to sit in a certain lunchroom separate from non-allergy kids. It's becoming more and more common each year!

Yes, I was on a flight once where the airline announced that no nuts of any kind were even allowed on the plane, and that if they were in our bags we needed to throw them out. Even having a nut in the air would have caused this person to have a reaction. So yes, it's definitely possible your child is that allergic.

Some people, even adults, are so allergic that they just cannot be in the same room as peanuts, and unless it's been cleaned extremely well, just can't go in even hours later.

Anything is possible with allergies. My son has a classmate with a severe allergy to peanuts and just touching hands when one is eating peanut butter sandwich can make his throat close up.

you have to ingest one of the 13 proteins of peanut butter to have a reaction to it. Now if they smell it they "could" be having an anxiety attack over the smell (hands sweat, heart races) but that's psychosomatic, not an allergic reaction.

yes! my friend is fatally allergic to peanuts - if someone has eaten peanuts recently and touches her or breaths on her she can still get a very bad reaction. make sure you see an allergist for this as it can be very dangerous and your child may need an epipen.
