Today, all my siblings left their plates at our table after eating (lol) I was still sitting there, and he came into the room and said, "They all left their plates here." He walked away a little then said, "Living like n**gers here.
I made a comment.. I forget it what I said exactly, but it wasbasically the clean version of "Whoa wtf?"
So then we sat there and argued for a little, I said a few things like, "Why do you have to be racist? The least you could say about that specific situation is white trash." But he seemed offended that I said "white trash."
He gave me examples, including one time he went into a different town to do electrical work, and I guess it's a mostly black community, but he said," What.. do they not have arms and legs."
I told him that he was qualified in his job, doesn't mean no one there could have done the work.
I'm mad because he's so racist, but he says that it shouldn't stress me out so much.
I know I won't be able to stop his generalizing..wats there to do?

We're not like, a family of rednecks.
But should I have just ignored his stupid remarks?

Well there isn't much you can do because one way or the other he is going to keep using a pejorative to describe a group of people. You can voice your opinion and let him know that you will not follow his examples. As it stands these days racism, hate, and murder are few issues will never cease to be whether here in the US or any else in the world. But do not live by his examples because you are better than him.

Hate to break it to you, but yes, he IS a redneck AND a racist, if the first thing out of his mouth is an insult like "n****r*, and said in a way meant to be an insult.

Just because he is, though, doesn't mean you are. You can't confront or correct him, but once you are in a home of your own, you can set the rules that no one uses that kind of language in your home. Rise above it.

First off, who is HE? I read that whole long paragraph trying to figure that out. I'm guessing maybe it's your dad, but regardless, you can't make someone change who they are, for better or for worse. HE has decided what his worldview is. In the future, whenever he says things like that, just say, "Don't say those kinds of things." and walk away. It won't do you any good, but at least you'll be letting him know that you don't appreciate his comments.

Next time he says something like that, just shake your head, like you would if someone said something very stupid. You aren't going to change his attitude. Just show him that he is an embarrassment.
