My iron is 1400 watts, or 1.4 kilowatts. If left on for 10 hours, it would consume 14 kilowatt-hours. Which alone, costs about $1.20 in my area. (roughly $.08 per kilowatt-hour). Well, actually my iron would turn itself off.

Hi,
Actually, an iron isn't using power all of the time it's on. It only uses enough power to maintain the set temperature. For example, if you're ironing a dampened shirt, the on portion of it's duty cycle is longer than if it's just sitting with the ironing plate touching nothing.
I have no idea what the duty cycles of irons are when not being used. If you had a clip-on ammeter, you could hook up something to get a close approximation. You could make a wild guess and assume that it has a 50% duty cycle, look on the label and see what the wattage rating is, find the cost of power in your area and do the calculation.

an iron consumes at least 1000 watts so if you left it on for 12 hours you consumed at least 12.0 kwh
