I know this is gross, which is why I've put off asking it. Please only answer if you really know. My male dog lives outside in the back yard. I walk him with me three times a week around the neighborhood for about 20 minutes. Even though we walk in the early evening and he gets fed in the mornings, for some reason, he has to poop at least once during his walks. I know he goes in the yard, so I don't see why this is necessary. I understand male dogs peeing on everything, but for gosh sakes! This is highly embarrassing, and I try to keep him out of public view as much as possible. Does anybody know why he does this? (Please no smartalecky answers - I'm plenty embarrassed enough as it is.) Thanks.

A couple of reasons... first of all, exercise is stimulating to his bowels.
Secondly, dogs don't like to poop in what they consider their space, so they prefer to do it elsewhere. That is why crate training is so helpful in housebreaking a dog.
I would bet the majority of his "lawn biscuits" are in the same area of the yard, for the same reason, to leave the rest of the yard for play.
Your dog is normal, and anyone owning a dog knows they like to 'go on the go', so there is no reason to be embarrassed.

If your dog is not spayed (neutered) then she may want to keep "marking her territory". Before my dog was neutered, he would never pee and poop everything. I would have to walk him for a long time. I suggest getting your dog spayed, when she is old enough of course. Try to walk her in the same area each time so she is used to her surroundings. While she is still a puppy, walk her instead of put her in the back yard. It will make her get used to you standing there while she is going to the bathroom. Also, you could try using a word like "go potty" or " "go poop/pee" that may work too if she is good at taking commands. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!

Because he is exercising, this has an effect on the entire body. One of the effects is it makes the bowels work, and therefore after a little while the body removes excess waste. If you are embarrassed by a natural body function of your dog, then you shouldnt have a dog. Do you clean up after your dog or do you leave it for the next person to step in?
Why should you be embarrassed?

The walk helps move things along and thru him so he has to go. This is normal and there is nothing to be embarrassed about everyone walks their dog in order to get them to poop. Just carry some grocery bags with you to pick it up, it's common courtesy to pick up after your dog rather than leave it on someone's lawn. My dogs will go three times a day even though they are only fed twice.

They often go a short while after eating (as do I -lol). In addition, a dog can develop a habit. Just bring some seal-able baggies along so you can clean it up (turn the bag inside out over your hand like a glove, pick it up, let the weight turn the bag inside in, and seal it); no need to be embarrassed (always remember that dogs are not people and act almost solely via instinct).

Aside from the exercise getting everything loosened up and moving, dogs will a lot of times go poop when they are nervous or excited. Happens a lot at the vet and groomer. So don't be embarrassed! Take it as a compliment! He is excited to be walking with you!

and what are you embarrassed about? Having to pick up the poop after your dog? You own a dog that is one thing you have to do, get used to it.Dogs do have to poop when they walk .as for the peeing that is marking it's territory..

I think it's probably what he smells. My dog poops EVERY time we go on a walk whick is every day, and somethimes he even poops twice. The reason is, they smell another dog, if they small another dog they probably have to elimnate marking it's territory, telling the dog that they've been there and they are competing for the territrory.
